Well, I got some cash for Christmas, and instead of buying more harps, I think I'll take some good old fashioned lessons from an instructor. I can go to the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. I'll have to have them evaluate my level before I pick a class, but here are the list of teachers:
* Joe Filisko Harmonica * Greg Gabor Harmonica * Skip Landt Harmonica, Autoharp * Mario Rabaza Harmonica * Rick Sherry Harmonica
Filisko would be the main guy I would want, and I haven't heard of the others. If Joe isn't available to me, is there someone else I should gravitate towards?
Of course I'll still check out Adam's videos!

I wouldn't bother with anybody else except Filisko he's one of the best to ever play the instrument. On top of he knows every technique there is, so if you want to learn OBs, bent octaves etc you only have to go to one guy. Joe is also an incredible guitar player.
That said, there are a couple of other cats you should take lessons from - Howard Levy in Evanston and James Conway in Chicago.

Ever thought about Phone Lessons. I was reserved at first, but was amazed after we got started. Plus you can do it from the comfort and privacy of your own home. My instructor calls it the blind mans instrument, and he's right. Unbelievable what he hears. We have used skype a little but not necessary. May be a little expensive but you have to contribute time and no gas money. Jimi Lee is my instructor. I also see Jon Gindick does the same. You caan contact Jimi by e-mail, jimilee@jimileeband.com And I Thank You K.C.

Phone lessons, skype etc is great, I do it too but if Philosfy can go in person to Jow, Howard or James then he should. These guys are legendary players and Howard is in the elite class of musicians.
Howard will charge you around $100, it's worth it.

I was looking at group lessons: around $150 for 6 weeks or so. I don't pay for gas, so that's not a problem for me, and to take lessons from a legend is worth the hour commute.

If you drive down from Chicago to Memphis--about 530 miles, flat and fast--I'll give you a 90 minute lesson for $50 on either February 5th or 6th. (Normally I charge $50/hr) Sliding scale. As you know, I've got this Modern Blues Harmonica thing happening in my hotel room one or both of those afternoons. I assume you're working and can't make it, but some people get crazy where harmonica is concerned, and I make the offer in good faith.
Rick Sherry played with Honeyboy Edwards for quite a while. I don't know what kind of teacher he is, but I suspect he's not a bad second choice after Joe. Joe is a terrific and generous teacher as well as remarkable player. Just don't let him sell you on that tongue-block fundamentalism. :)

Adam: Nothing more I would like to do than have that lesson in Memphis. Great Instructor at a Great Price!!I would also enjoy the MBH Open, and how great to see Jimi Lee and Brandon Bailey perform on my Birthday weekend ( Also my Beautiful Brides Birthday Weekend ).Now the only problem. If I show up in Memphis, I may have to ReMarry that Woman for the Third time!! And that would be one expensive lesson. And I Thank You K.C.

You guys are definitely lucky to have so many good teachers in reach. Here in Switzerland I still have to find anyone who teaches harp - not an easy thing I can assure you.

DaDoom: I do feel lucky! I live in a one traffic light village, population 1,500. My first instructor lives only 3miles away and hes a state and European melodic champ. There is also another Blues harp player in are small town. I am a 1,000 miles from Memphis, but would love to get that lesson from Adam! Good Luck!! And i Thank You K.C.

Adam, I would love to take a lesson from you, but the distance is a little too much. I spend enough time away from home as it is, and the wife would kill me to go that far! I'm VERY appreciative of what you have done for me via the internet, and I know you've impacted the playing and dedication of thousands of harpers.
PS: did you get the package?

phil, where do you live? i forget.
there is a great instructor in indiana, around valapolossaaalla. (or what ever that town is called in the n.w. corner of indiana)
if i remember right, he has group lessons and the price is a great deal, they get together and jam for 1/2 hour, go over new lesson material, jam again and sometimes play out.
this guy can show you just about everything filisko teaches!

Well, I braved the snow last night and went to the Old Town School of Folk music. I met Joe Filisko, and about 20 hard core harp guys, all very nice! After the lessons, they hit a local bar and trade stories. It was a great time!
