I've joined this band 2 years ago. Right around the time Mr. Gussow started posting his videos. I been practicing what Gussow has preached. I'm still trying to master the basics. Making a lot of mistakes.... but over all having a blast doing it.

Here is my progress after 2 years. I know I make a few errors but I welcome any comments on my playing... on our band... Lets here it.

I love this band. I stumbled across you a few months ago on you tube. The singer is great and your harp sounds real good, you've got great tone dude and i love the sound you get from playing amplified. I just bought an amp recently an Epiphone valve junior and i am still searching for THAT sound,(do you use any effects or pedals?)Keep up the good work!!

Hi,
I dont seem to be able to find you on the vimeo site.
I have tried putting in the number in but it does not seem to recognise your video I guess I must be doing something stupid.
I have been playing for 19 months so I would like to see you and compare.
Cheers

If you type Rhythm and the method into you tube they come up on the search. If that is the correct name of the band, the link on here took me to a band called rhythm and the methond, they rock!

Hey man Thanks for the compliment.

I'm playing striaght in to my amp with no effects or pedels. Its a tiny tube amp from the late sixties. Probably about 8-10 watts. Its got a little 8 inch speaker with a little magnet. The company that makes the amp is called Thorncraft. Basicaly its a no name brand. I just mic it through the house PA system.... thats the best. It makes it feel and sound so full. When the little 8 watt amp gets pushed to the limit it starts to break up and you get the natural distortion. sometimes the sound guy puts some reverb on through his mixing board after its mic'd.

I was told one time by a veteren harp player: buy a low wattage all tube amp with a little speaker. preferable made with the old technology. I have a shure green bullet mic. nothing special.

Just highlight the link... copy and paste it where you would punch in a website address. it should work. if not punch in rhythm and the method in the search at vimeo.com

and I welcome any veteren harp players to throw some tips... pointers.... suggestions.... the middle finger.... anything my way. I welcome all comments. I'm a tough kid from north of boston.... i can handle it

Chowda30,
It sounds like your 2 draw is a little flat about 15 cents and 4 blow way too sharp. You came in a little early at 1:12, walked all over the vocals(not cool), buy a metronome and lock yourself in the woodshed until you get it. I had to turn it off when yall lost the beat, I must be a blues nazi.

LMAO, I'm just kiddin, you said you could handle it. You guys sounded great to me, the gal singing is great. Your harp playing really added to the song. A+++++++ stuff, you guys keep keepin on!!

Chowda30. Nice Job. I've been playing only 20 months. Only 8 months working on blues ( mainly tones, vibrato, bending, etc. I'd be pretty happy with where you are. Keep at it, everything will fall into place. I get really frustrated and then all of a sudden another door opens and a break through happens. Like a lot of people, I Want It Now. Like Chris said, gotta keep on keepin on!

Oh! Was there any harp in this?? I just had this vision of a really hot lead singer--then the clip ended! ;)

Seriously--it was a good clip--just took me a little time to get it to play--way slow to download.

I don't think Chris was joking altogether about the tuning of your harp--somewhere around the 4 draw or maybe blow it seems like there could be a sharp one--but maybe you are just playing a harp that is tuned that way--sometimes my Bushman's sound a little off to me, compared to a Hohner tuning.

You got a warble that just makes me jealous--keep up the good work!

Chowda30 says, "I'm playing straight in to my amp with no effects or pedals. Its a tiny tube amp from the late sixties. Probably about 8-10 watts."

And I like it. I have to confess I'm not keen on Adam's two amps and delay, but maybe that's just the quality of the sound on YouTube.

P.S. About the 4th note you play is a 2-5 draw, I think, but with tremolo. How the hell do you get that tremolo on the draw? I can't do it yet. Well, OK I can do it badly by sort of trying to shiver whilst breathing in, but there's no point in practising it if I'm doing it badly because I'm using the wrong technique!

Thanks for the honesty... I guess. But it made me chuckle. Thanks for the compliments brotha.

Old Wailer

Yeah she's amazing... shes got a lot of life... jumping around the stage and she writes all our original music. We got more viedos on youtube and more to come. You got good ears my friend. I almost never tune my harps but I do adjust them from time to time. I'm playing a hohner special 20. I had a veteren harp player tell me once... when in doubt warble. I got a lot of practice with that.

Andrew

I was tongue blocking right there. A little special effect where I play the 4 draw but just tongue slap rapidly on the 1-2-3. I want to learn the tongue swish thing that Dr. Gussow talks about so badly. But I cant seem to do it fast enough and my jaw moves all around. I think I'm gonna put that question up as a new topic... how to do that tongue swish.

I very thankful of the harp community and all of the help and support.

PS... if the video is running spotty ... you can shut of the HD. if you move the cursor over the screen all of the options will pop up in the right... just click HD off. It will move quicker and less spotty

Say what you mean!

Yeah I remember - he says he won't do it for the camera without the harp because it's pornographic (or words to that effect). So he didn't just leave you mystified!
