Hello, I'm a young harp player from Poland and I started playing about 5 months ago, I've posted some of my harmonica recordings on YouTube, and I would like you to check them out and write what do you think about them. Is it good playing as for 5 months? What mistakes do I made and what should I correct and work on? Here's the links:
My latest recording on Hering Vintage 1923 (G): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGDgFI1wbJ0
and two earlier on Marine Band Deluxe (D): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-cGYiLimsY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYRTfAkgK8c

Hello Pulatom, Took a look at your videos and was quite impressed seeing as you have only been playing for 5 months.
Your improvisations were good but I found waterboy a bit wavery.
I liked your backing too. Did you do that yourself with a bass harp? You'll have to let us know how you set these tracks up.
Just think what you'll be like in ten months. Well done and keep it up. Impressive.

Hey Dude--slow down! There are those of us like me who don't play that good after a year and a half--have some respect! ;)
Very nice job. . .

Thanks. That backing with bass harmonica wasn't done by me, I recorded this for a harmonica contest and I didn't have to record my own backing, but the others are mine. I don't have any band so normally I record whole songs by myself, track after track. First I record bass and mix it with drum machine track, then I record rythm guitar and mix it with bass+drum and so on with other instruments. It takes some work and time, but I like doing it :).

I liked the Metalica one best. Not something I would normally listen to but nice playing especially after 5 months.

Man,
You must rehearse everday, all day to get a sound like this in 5 months. What did you do? What did you find most difficult once you got started.

I'm a self thought musician, Bob Dylan inspired me to play the harmonica. I didn't have any harp tutorials or books at that time (I didn't even know how to actually start learning to play) so I've been trying to play Bob's harmonica riffs along with guitar (I was using harmonica holder). Then I've learned playing these songs with clean notes, and I've accidentally "discovered" the 2nd position while playing a song in E on my guitar with A harmonica on the holder, and it was the beginning of my blues playing. I read an article on the internet (I didn't have the internet connection till that time) about bending and I've tried it. I did bends properly on (1) and (4) after about 2 months of playing. I still have some problems with bending, especially on 10 hole blow and one step bend on three hole draw. I've tried to play some blues licks but my technique still wasn't good, I had some problems with hitting clean and strong single notes, especially two hole draw so I've been using 3 hole blow instead, and this didn't sound well. I've learned how to do hand vibrato very late, in my 3 month of playing (after I've done my first bends!) At this time I've found Adam's lessons on YT which greatly helped me with my two hole draw and vibrato (I still don't do it good but I think I know how to develop my skills on it). About one month ago I've learned how to adjust harp to do overblows and to overblow 4, 5 and 6 hole blow on a C harp (but I can do it only on 6 hole on lower harps), and here I am now. I've been trying to play Sonny Terry's rythm from lesson 008 recently but now I have a break from the harp due to my throat disease.

Awesome Pulatom. It took me two months to get my first draw bend - honestly!

Hello, I've just recorded a new version of NEM on harp, could you check it out and tell me if it's better than the first one? I've recorded it about a month after the earlier version.

Pulatom,
Great job. I was especially moved by Nothing Else Matters (Take 1&2). Did you play guitar on those tracks? I must say that you are on the right track. Keep us posted from time to time on your progress. ---------- They've got a name for the winners in the world. I...I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama The Crimson Tide. Call me Deacon Blue.

Thanks! Yes, I played guitar there, I was using Westone Spectrum III and a XII string Hofner accoustic (on the second version). When I do any new recording, I'll be sure to post it here. Cheers
