Guys I am looking at buying a Boss DD-3 pedal in the next week or so.

They are on special at my local music store and are reduced by 1/3 (in NZ). For about the same money or slightly more I could get a second hand 80's one of ebay and get it shipped from the US/UK but take my chance on it being fuly working.

There seems to be a load of hype about the old Japanesse ones being better than the modern Taiwnesse ones. Is it true or should I just buy new and settle with a 5 yr warranty?

I am running a modified Champion 600 and a ceramic Voice of music mic at the moment.

Would appreciate the view of any other DD-3 users, I know Adam uses an one which at a guess would be Japanesse.

WARNING: I AM NOT A DD-3 USER, but I fell like I have something to add. (sorry)

I was interested in buying a pedal about a week ago. The guy at my music store let me bring in my full set up and test them all out. You could do the same, and if you're not satisfied with the sound then go for the older ones off eBay.

I ended getting a RC-2 loop station. It lets me loop my guitar skills and ruin them with my lack of harmonica skills.

I think the 'loads of hype' part is important here. Go for verifiable facts instead. Short of a truly bad product upgrade, Boss is going to make a useable pedal unless they've really made a drastic difference in a feature that was on a previous pedal that was valuable and they just don't do it anymore. In 5 years, they'll have the next best or worst upgrade out, and the same hype about the new pedals now will be going on then. Short of pro level recording whatever they're cranking out now will do you just fine.

Blackbird...I was sort of thinking along those lines. They wouldn't replace a good item with a bad one as it wouldn't sell.
g.... It does make sense to take my stuff to a store and hook it all up and will do so, could save me money by getting the correct product first time.
I havent played electronically for long and it takes a while to get used to cupping the mic etc so I sort of wanted to get some opinions on the DD-3 to remove the fact it might be bad technique on my part and not a bad pedal that was making strange noises in the music store.

I'm new to the forum and harmonica, but I've played guitar for many years. I also own several Boss pedals, some are Japanese from the 80's and some are the newer Taiwanese versions. Here's the deal, you will find plenty of reviews for both the vintage and newer Boss pedals. IMHO, there is a bit better quality with older pedals; however, it's important to find a reputable source when buying these. Also, make sure the older models are actually Japanese…While some of the older gear originated in Japan, it may have also been produced in Taiwan...Be careful when ordering online!

Finally, there are plenty of decent Taiwanese Boss pedals to be found for a reasonable price...You might even stumble across a trade-in at your local music store. I would also suggest checking out Monte Alllums website (http://www.monteallums.com/pedal_mods.html), you can actually modify many of the Boss pedals with his upgrade kits and transform them into boutique quality gear. The upgrades are reportedly easy to install if you have soldering skills, or you can have them professionally installed for approximately $25…I have experienced great success with the modified Boss pedals!

I hope this helps…Good luck with your search!
