Hi Harpers,I don't know about you guys but it seems to me that every time i get a new harp it will have at least 1 or 2 stuborn reeds. What i mean by that is reeds that produce a shrill tone or have a slight delay before they play or worst of all just won't play at all,so can anyone tell me what i should do to loosen the annoying little twats up? Should i be opening or closing the gap and by how much,Sometimes the reed will start to play normally after a few days use,But not always,How the hell does that happen,I mean i don't think that Rumplestiltskin is popping round my house whilst the glue sets on his latest footwear and fixing them for me, So what's going on? Somebody please give me a clue cos my F Promaster is driving me round the twist and i've got a great Steve Baker song that i want to master but the damn harp keeps pissing on my parade!

if there is a delay before the reed sounds, or if the reed won't play at all the gap needs to be increased. Do this slowly and a LITTLE bit at a time. The reeds are delicate. A good rule of thumb is the reed should sit one reed tips thickness from the plate. As for the shrill tone it could be any number of things but most likely a burr in the reed slot. Remove it with a .002 inch feeler gauge.

Geordie,
I feel your pain.
If you are a chicago style player then go to
West Weston’s Custom ’Marine Band’ Harmonicas on Google and read and listen. He is in the UK and does a great custom job.
Have a look at my you tube site (Oxharp) and listen to any of the west weston clips. He is playing his own customs.
They cost as much as a MB delux but play fantastically with out any worry. He will retune and replace the reeds when they go.
I have met him several times and his harps are definately one to try? dont take my word email him.
If you need any other info about the vids his playing technique his gear etc let me know.
email me russ.turner@ntlworld.com
That goes for anyone else who is interested.

Thanx for the replies folks, Especially Oxharp, KC69 you play rock/blues in church! that must be a different kind of church to the bloody boring pit of misery my Baptist preacher dad dragged me to 4 times a week throughout my childhood, Maybe if i'd gone to a rockin place like that i would'nt have grown up to be a Atheist!

geordiebluesman: Its different for me too. We really do Rock, not headbangin, but it aint your old time gospel. The pastor wrote alot of the music, he's a great lead guitar and singer. He also owns the local music store, how cool, he meets all kinds of muscians from every walk of life. We are in a small building, been known to run the older members to the back, but they love it to. I guess thats what its all about " The Love" Oh I forgot the best part. My Pastor loves to fish. We have church on Saturday night so he can Fish on Sunday mourning. Gotta Love It!!
