I was just watching a youtube video of Billy Joel's "Piano Man", and was suprised to see that Joel is using what appears to be a Shure PE5H just like our great Gussow uses. I have never seen that model of microphone used by anyone else. Here is the video:

By the way, the harmonica playing in piano man is absolutly awful:[

I like the harmonica in Piano Man. Its not advanced, or really clean, but its a nice melody, and it fits the song.

You're right, Brandon. That's my mic. You're notice that the video is ID'd as being from 1985. That's the year I bought my mic at Matt Umanov's Music, a store in Greenwich Village.

"..... and how good of a harp player is he? Really?"
See, this question brings up an important point:
Technically, he's not much of a harp player, but he is a top-notch professional musician --and technically, he's one of the best pop-rock keyboard players alive. The harp he plays works, because Mr. Joel plays within his limits and he uses the sound well in the context of the tunes. Neil Young is another harp player I admire for the ability to overcome technical limitations with awesome general musicianship. For a brilliant lesson on why musicality is more important than technique, especially for intermediate players who don't quite have pro-level chops, listen to Nicky Shane, who teaches this better than any player I can think of.
Compare his playing to Billy Joel's and beginners take heart!

Harpnoodler,
Good comeback! His limited harp playing DOES add a certain quality to his tunes.
