If anyone gets a chance to catch any of the incarnations of this year's Hummel Harp Summit, do it.
This past Saturday, I went to yet another one (I think I've been to a couple dozen). As usual, it was great fun. But, this year was especially cool with Curtis Salgado. He's back after his liver issues and sounds great. That dude has one of the best live blues voices going. You guys in the East will get your chance. Just check Hummel's website for the dates.
This past Saturday I attended the second (late) show at the new San Francisco Yoshi's down in the old Fillmore district. It was Charlie Musselwhite's 65th birthday that night. So, Hummel, Salgado, Estrin, Oskar and Zinn on guitar regaled Charlie with a very souped up version of Happy Birthday.
Pretty fun.
If you can.....do.

WOW! That show is SO great--I caught the one in Seattle a while back--no Salgado of course--the worst player there (for me) was Lee Oskar--and he ain't no slouch--just not really a blues guy.
Any one of them would be well worth the price to go see them--for me, Rick Estrin was my favorite--what a showman!

I hate you guys on the West Coast. You get to see all these great harp players just about anytime you want. Just joking, but I am jealous as hell. The Blow Out came to Pittsburgh twice and I was in harp geek heaven. Got to see Curtis-it was his last show on the tour- and he was fantastic. Didn't realize he was that good a harp player. He held this one note for a really, really long time, using circular breathing. An impressive technical achievement-but not real musical. Great voice. STEELERS RULE!!!!

I was there for Salgado singing at Hummel's show in '07 and I gotta agree - when you can hear Curtis sing live, drop what you're doing and attend.

It's Estrin for me, too. Have seen the Nightcats a half dozen times and got most of their music on my "Jam-a-long" MP3 files. Love that jump style. Rick's clever lyrics are a kick - the guy can write.

Was at Hummel's show in Seattle at the Triple Door with oldwailer and have to agree. I wish Curtis Salgado would have been there, too. I've seen the guy at least a half a dozen times and will see him every time I can when he returns to Seattle. Rick Estrin is also the man. If you get a chance to see him take it. I've seen him with Little Charlie a couple times as well and he is quite the caricature (not to mention that he can play the heck out of a harp). I love the way Estrin puts the harp in his mouth like a cigar and plays without his hands. Kinda like Sonny Boy II or Harmonica Frank Floyd.

Jam-a-long: Created playlists that are a hoot to play along with, in the common keys. Have a wide range of old and new. Throw it on the car stereo. Got the little 2" mini-amp and mic workin, steering with the knees, watching for highway patrol! Had a fellow player and CHP tell me, "Cool, but don't let me catch you". Filmed myself playing for the first time, in my living room last month. My wide open darting eyes were freaky looking. Resolved to next time wear sunglasses. When I thought about it, if one plays while driving, a lot, you of course are gonna be wide-eyed and looking around.
Yeah, Estrin, the zoot-suit, tall hair wearing, "..got a feelin like I'm talkin to my next ex-wife", character.

BluTed, have you been driving in the lane next to me?
You just described my car playing.
Funny thing. Up where I live, there are a lot of retired types who moved up to the middle of nowhere. At my summer barbecues, I have several ex-CHP's and former deputies that have moved up to the area. One guy plays decent guitar. Every one of them laughs at my driving and playing.....but, admonishes me to not get caught or have an accident and have harps all over the cab of my truck when the attending officer walks up.

went to an awesome hummel blowout just last friday- it was amazing! The players were Hummel, Salgado, Lee Oskar, Charlie Musselwhite and John Mayall. I can't tell you how amazing it was- my favorite was Hummel doing a wonderful rendition of "summertime" on chromatic. ---------- "Without music, life would be a mistake" -Nietzsche
