I've been working at the harp fairly seriously for a couple of years now, spurred on by Adam's videos, and am reaching the "intermediate" stage. I've recently taken on a study to really familiarize myself with the harp, including how to imply chords and fill out the sound in the first three playing positions. Tongue-blocked "splits" and octaves are useful for this.

Now most of us are familiar with the 1-4 and 2-5 variations, but if you look at all of the possibilities, there are some other interesting and challenging ones. Jason Ricci demonstrated in one of his videos the 2"-5 draw octave (I think it was) where he bends the 2 draw on the left side of his tongue and leaves the 5 draw natural on the right.

These are beyond me at this point, but how about a 1'-4' draw octave (flat 5th in cross), or 1ob-4ob octave (flat 3rd octave, and also flat 7th octave of the IV7 chord, in 1st position)?

Do any of the advanced players out there actually use any of these more obscure techniques? Any others that people have attempted?

We just had a short and sweet thread a couple of pages back on bent octaves and the -2" -5 octave. I know Carlos Del Junco uses the 1'-4' octave, but I can't recall exactly which song. I have never heard of anybody doing the 1ob-4ob split, but I'm sure it's possible. By the way, they are both the flat third.

I have been working on the -1'-4' for a couple of weeks now, and I am getting better. I still need a lot of work on the -2" -5. I'm a lip blocker normally, so I can bend tongue-blocked, but it a challenge to me.

Adam does the -4 -8 split and then there is the -5 and -9 split, which forces you to be pretty exact when blocking out 3 holes.

Pretty coincedental you posting this. I am at a point where I want to become proficient at octaves and incorporating them into my playing. Guess I'll surf the lessons.
