I have an old Silvertone tube power amp. RCA plug in and speaker built in. Got it off of an old 1960 era tape recorder. The Tape recorder itself has a regular amp . pre-amp in it but I really do not want to mess with that -I would have to destroy the unit and my Mom bought it for me in 1961 from Sears and it took her forever to pay for it. This amp was the second channel with all pre-amping done in the tape deck.
Not knowing a thing about guitar amps, but knowing a lot about component stereo, in the old days I built a Dynaco audio pre-amp and a Dynaco power amp......
So my question - is there a smallish pre amp that can take a mic plug or Instrument in and pipe out and into the RCA input jack of a power amp?
Just curious as to what this old puppy would sound like.
Thanks.

Hey Dan...these are exactly what I use for harp. I have changed out the RCA input for a 1/4 jack and it's good to go. I didn't need a pre-amp. The units I have are from a UK manufacturer called Hacker and were originally attached to a record player via the RCA lead. They give incredible tone but need to be mic'ed up obviously if you are playing at a jam etc, although in my garage it's plenty load enough. I also have another 2 units from different manufacturers (all originally used to amp up record palyers) and I have done the same thing with them,(changed the RCA for 1/4 inch jack) and they sound great. Changing the input is really simple and if you can solder you can do this job. You will be amazed at the tone.

Thanks for the info, Yes, I have an adapter but was lookign for a small pre-amp that may give me a little more control. My mic has no volume control on it. I think the base amp in this is similar to the amps in the old Silvertone guitar amps if the 1960's. My mom paid $180 for the tape recorder in 1960! did not realize what a sacrafice that was till many years later. That was like 2 weeks take home pay for my Dad. Have the old 6v6gt tube in it.
Thanks for responding.

Well, I picked up a ART Tube MPstudio. Inexpensive and has some good reviews. We'll see what it does when I get it.

I'd be interested to hear also Dan as I could use one of these with my own amps.
