We had a fun time, y'all. Attendance was respectable but not overwhelming; it would be fair to say that I had overestimated the amount of booze I'd need. Jimi Lee made it, despite having gotten no sleep on the bus ride from Austin. Brandon and his mom Stephanie were there. Billy Gibson made it. Teeny Tucker did not, but I saw here later on Beale Street. I'll let others who were there weigh in, since I'm not sure what handles they use here. Trey from Nashville, Tuck (& Ms. Tuck) from Pittsburgh w/friends, Chris from Seydel.....
I plugged in my Harpgear 2 and blew briefly, to demonstrate a particular technique. Brandon and I had a brief jam. Several other people played.
Brandon played on Friday afternoon at the Youth Showcase: 19 minutes, solo, on two harps. C harp acoustically, then A harp amped up. Very strong response from the audience, which included Bruce Iglauer from Alligator Records. I think we need to get Brandon singing/playing with a band for next year, or the year after that.......
I will confess to being surprised by how often I was recognized, stopped in the street, by people doing double takes who'd seen me on YouTube. Brandon will confirm this. Beale Street on Friday was like a huge convention of like-minded souls.
More later.

Unfortunately, I'm new to the forum and didn't find out about the event until the last minute...The timing was not good for me this year.
However, I live near St. Louis (which is 5 1/2 hours from Memphis) and would love to check it out in the future...I hope this is an annual event...It sounds like great time!

I was there, but failed to make the "meet and greet" at Adam's hotel. Long story, but basically I left Michigan with a buddy late Thursday night. We had some issues Friday morning, and I didn't get into Memphis untill about 5:30 so we didn't make it over to Adam's hotel. (which is really the main reason I went down!) I had purchased a fifth of cognac to bring to his room but was forced to drink that myself over the weekend......
Anyway, we hit Beale St. about 8:30 Friday night, and the place was jumping! The first bar we stopped into had a very cool band with a solid harp player, very mean sound and great tone. Bob Margolin and many, many, other players were jamming at Rum Boogie Cafe that night. I watched Bob from 11:00 P.M. till about 1:00 a.m. Singers, harp players, guitar players, stand up bass....just fantastic night at Rub Boogie.
I stumbled into B.B. Kings place about 1:00 A.M and was there just in time to see Jimi Lee jam with the house band....let me tell ya....the guy is better in person than on U-tube. (I know, hard to believe) Especially his vocals....he was incredible. He also wailed on the harp, I mean he killed it. I was impressed before, but after seeing him live, I can honestly say "that guy is killer".
I was really bummed at not making the 4-6 at Adams room, but I tried not to let it ruin my weekend. Great atmosphere, bands going all day, everywhere, it was very cool. I will be back next year if possible.

Well, I just got back and I'm still aglow. I had an incredible time. It was wonderful to meet Adam,Brandon,Billy Gibson and Jimi Lee. I also met some fellow harp geeks and shared in the plentiful libations.I had a lesson with the esteemed Dr. Gussow and learned I can't overblow or tap my foot. I'll be woodshedding for awhile. Got to see Brandon Bailey's performance and he is a joy to listen to. Maybe he can pay his way through medical school playing with a band on weekends. There was blues music everywhere. After Brandon's show, I went to see Billy Gibson gig with TWO bands and it was only 4:30! Of the harp playing bands I saw, CG and the Hammer from Israel were great and Ty Curtis Band were incredible. Made me wish I lived closer to Salem, Ore. Also a band called Monkeyjunk had a really great harp player(Steve Marrinner,I think). Fri. night I went to see Jimi Lee and he was just unbelievable. He had the crowd cheering and I thought for sure he was a shoo-in for the finals. Unfortunately, the judges didn't feel that way.I also saw the guy that beat him,and for me it was no contest. Jimi Lee all the way. Oh well, just my opinion. "Pocketful of Soul" could become a harpers anthem. The Rum Boogie jam with Bob Margolin. was great. If you can get to Memphis for next year's IBC's--Do It! Once you do,you'll wonder how you could have ever not gone.

Yeah, that sounds cool. Let me know which one you're going to. I just retired from the military, so I've got some time on my hands.
And yes, I love Elderly Music. Great store. Like most music stores though, they have limited harp gear..or harps for that matter. I almost purchased an old Fender Champ they had in December, but I went with a Harp Gear 2 instead. Glad I did. I'll shoot you an e-mail when I'm jamming in that area with my brother. We usually play at a place in Pinckney every 4-6 weeks.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but the high point of my open house was the call I got at about 3:45 from Blind Mississippi Morris, who was downstairs with his wife. "Come on up!" I yelled, and he did, and we had a chance to visit before anybody else showed up. He was born and raised in Clarksdale; he's only three years older than me. He said his uncle was Willie Dixon. He talked about growing up in an environment where "famous blues guys" were just the folks who came to visit. I asked about gigging in Memphis. He mentioned that he had a steady gig at B. B. King's. Sometimes he plays with his band and sometimes it's just him and a guitar player.
Nice guy--and nice of him to stop by.
See what you guys missed?! Next year......

Oh, man--a new hero I hadn't heard of! This Morris is really good--the guitarist you can't see is pretty cool too--but the singing is the best part!

An A harp in 2nd position works pretty well with this--for my ears. . .
