Okay, like perhaps many of you, I am fairly inept when it come to music theory. Lately I've been trying to fix that, and I feel like I've started to have some success. Winslow Yerxa's Harmonica for Dummies book got me started, and tehe pieces began to fall in place. I was just doing some online research, and started reading some of the theory stuff at the HarpOn site. I'd always left that site alone becasue it was a "chromatic-oriented site", and I'm a diatonic guy. Well, it turns out, music theory is music theory, and that site is chock full of it. Not only that, it's layed out for harp players with examples and in language we can understand. this link provides the most succinct and easily understood discussion of chords and chord notes I've found. Take a look at the rest of the site too. There's great info on tongue blocking and other techniques, as well as a lot more music theory... Enjoy!

Glad to hear you got the info you needed. Jon Gindick's book "Rock n' Blues Harmonica" is pretty good too. Brandon Bailey turned me on to that and it's now one of my favorites. Anyone starting out on harp should pick that book up.

I got the rock n blues book a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. Any tips on how to practice with it and get the most out of it? I feel so much more can be gained aside from what's written. Lately I just practice the riffs over the jam tracks hoping some 'aha' happens.

I've found HowMusicWorks.org to be a very succinct and understandable online source. You have to pay for the music clips, but I didn't need them.

I've recently purchased Adam's MBH video on Eight Bar Blues,
and started to work out some harp tab for some of the chords he talks about. Here is the tab for the #IVdim7 chord in second position (this is an experiment-- exported my working document as HTML, clipped that table out of it, and pasted in here).

If there is interest, I will find a way to make available the other chords I've worked out. Having the chords tabbed in this form is useful for "comping" (accompanying) the song, as Adam shows in his excellent lesson. I don't know why there is so much space inserted here before the table is displayed.... look down!

Mrso&so: That's really great! It's funny that you got some extra space there, but the table seems to have formatted really well. I'd definately be interested in seeing what else you got. I haven;t bought that particular lesson, but it seems like a useful one, so i'll probably get it...
To the others: I've been meaning to get a gindick book. My first books were the David Harp ones ("bending the blues", and "positions"), which were okay. Then I got some of the steve baker books which are also good, but both lacked enough real music theory. My local borders was going out of business, so I was able to pick up a havily discounted copy of Winslow Yerxa's book (60% off!), which I found to be really helpful (but always thought was too expensive at retail prices)... He does a great job of applying real, un-watered-down music theory to the harmonica withou making it boring. Plus there are TONS of recorded examples of everything from the sound of all the bends/oveblows/overdraws to scales, arppegios, chords, rythyms etc...
Hearing your advice, I probably will buy the Gindick book when I get enough money saved up...

Great news. Adam has kindly uploaded a corrected version of
Harmonica Positions PDF (free MBH download). Of interest to this thread, I've added chord tabs for various blues chords, including those mentioned in Adam's MBH Eight Bar Blues Progressions video, and some minor chords. Enjoy.

Are the progression diagrams impossible to understand or is it just me...

@mr_so&so There's a wealth of info in that pdf! I just downloaded it, and I'm going to print it out and post it on the wall in the room where I practice... Thanks for doing this!
