Ive finally saved up enough pennies to buy myself a Seydel 1847. Ive heard so much about them im gonna have to give one a go. My problem now is which model to choose?
I love wooden comb harps so the 1847 original seems like a natural choice but i really like to the look of the 1847 Silver model, the one with a plastic white comb. I was wondering if anyone out there has tried one or both of these models and what they think about em. I can only afford one of them so i thought maybe someone out there can help me decide which might be better?

honestly spend you money on a custom harp for what you pay for the seydel the custom harp will play so much better.

for $85 you could get a lotus harp. Having played both the lotus and the 1847 id take the lotus and day of the week hands down. so much better. and the gentle man that makes these tiny little pocket masterpieces posted right above me. skip the 1847 and get a lotus. you wont be sorry. and if anything happens to your lotus chris will repair it for less that the price of a new hohner. seydel costs $50+ just to get a new set of reeds!

I got interested in the Seydel Harps and they are very nice. I like the way the front has a curvature that makes it smoother against the mouth. I got A and F in the original and D in the Silver. Nice harps, still had to take them apart to gap them.

I prefer my SP20's that I take more time to Gap, retune, emboss and align then I do the Seydel's, the SP20's for one thing are louder, the 1847's more mellow. I find the 1847's in my jacket pocket for playing in the car, practicing scales, learning licks and SP20's in my gig case for on stage. I've heard very good things about Buddha's harps but I know how I want them so I would rather set up my own harps. Who knows I may try one sooner or later as I did with the Seydel's but for now I'm really happy with the way I set them up.

To finally answer your question, I prefer the Silver 1847 I like the plastic comb better then wood. But the Original 1847 is a pretty mutha, I must say.

I don't like the seydel combs. I've built up nine 1847s now and I've been forced to replace or modify the existing comb on all except two of them. The plastic ones are better but they are not totally flat and there are design issues that prevent them from being better.

I do however, think the 1847 is a much better out of the box harmonica than any hohner but you pay for it up front too so it's a wash. I can make even the cheapest harp best the sedyel. So unless you don't want to work on your own harp or spend the money on a custom the seydel is a decent choice but for my money, I'd pay somebody to set up a marine band or other hohner.

i've had the seydel 1847 silver low C that mrs codpiece bought me for christmas for a few days, and am quite pleased with it.
am i knocked out with it?i can't say i am.it's a nice enough harp, and looks quite classy,as does the promaster i have. give me the SP20 any day of the week.
the seydel isn't ballsy enough for what i want.it plays nice, which is the problem.i don't want it to sound nice.i want it to have attitude.it doesn't do it for me.
the SP20,on the other hand has loads of,what you lot over there would call kick ass to it.
i have a SP20 LOW F that i just love doodlin' with.i'll be completing the full set of SP20s,and thats now officialy my harp of choise.
BTW,i've never heard of a lotus harp before this thread,so will someone with first hand knowledge tell me about it.

My 1847 was just a normal d harp until it was set up by bertram becher from seydel then it played infinitely better. Got a zen harp on the way though (yay!) so will compare the two---------- "Blow as thou pleaseth"

The comb on the Seydel Silver was designed to mimic wood in density, crushability, etc. The biggest difference is looks and the classic has rounded tines that stick up a little bit. There's no difference really in how they sound or play. Both play better than a Silver Plus, IMO.

I wish they formed the Silver comb (white plastic) like the Classic (wood). I LOVE the wider holes in the Classic as well as how they are rounded in two planes. Very comfortable to play.

The plastic comb of the Silver allows the harp to be immersed for cleaning without disassembly, but I so prefer the mouthfeel of the Classic. I did buy one Silver comb to try and transferred the covers and plates from a Classic to it, but didn't like it.... I eventually put a set of spare "A" 1847 reedplates and a set of Seydel Soloist covers on the Silver comb and it is one of my pocket-carry harps. Great fun to pull out wherever and whenever. As they say, "When in doubt, whup it out!" They were talking about harmonicas, weren't they? ;-)

The playability of the low pitched keys, like Low Eb or Low F that are made by Seydel, most especially the 1847, as far as out of the box harps go, beats any Hohner made ones in that range by a country mile.

I've found actually the 1847's are louder than most SP20's are.
