I've had a scary week. I'd never been happy with my MB in D, especially the 2-hole draw bends, so last week I did some embossing on the 2, 3 and 4 draw holes. Completely wrecked the 3-hole, which sounded like a laryngitic mosquito in a tin can. I'd done a similar thing to my G harp, but that blew back into shape after a day (it's now exquisite to play), so I assumed the D harp would, but after 3 days I was losing hope, so I went to harmonicasdirect and ordered a D and a Low F, ooops - the server was down, no joy! They email me asking to reorder, but this time I think I want a DeLuxe in D. No go, they don't have one in stock. Finally tonight I take the cover off the D harp and look at the 3-hole with a 10x magnifying glass and I can see that I've rotated the reed slightly on its rivet, so I push it back and it's finally working again! So I go to harmicasdirect and just order the low F and save myself some money!

Did I tell you I got impatient and gapped my brand new DeLuxe in A? It plays like a dream now, and I'm thinking it is worth the extra money if you don't have to seal the wood with 10 coats of salad-bowl varnish and all that crap. And the screws are really nice. A subtle disadvantage is that because both cover plates come off together it is fiddly to re-assemble the DeLuxe, as there is a risk of damaging the draw reeds.

that's too much excitement for me, my friend.

I had a lot of problems with my SP20 "A" and it was my only "A" so when I said screw it, and gapped it, and it worked -- it was a happy moment. I know where you're coming from.

merry christmas.

It's now a given that I'm going to gap my harps, unless "there's something wrong with them" (lol).
Altogether I've got 11 harps (including a 14-hole, a low-D MB, a GM and the deluxe) and the only ones I'm playing "out of the box" are the MB in Eb and the 14-hole.
