Excuse me while I wax philosophical for a moment. I was just out driving around at lunch and listening to a compilation of J. Geils tunes and I was struck at just how simple M.D. makes it all sound. I think it's truly inspiring. Sure, he can wail away on "Whammer Jammer" or "Chimes" but what I might enjoy the most is how he plays such simple backing/filling harmonica. There are so many tunes where he's just playing (if my ears aren't deceiving me...) simple 2 and 3 draw riffs. As a relative newcomer to playing the harp I get a kick out of the fact that I can actually play along with him while Peter Wolf and Geils take the lead. Even some of his solo's, when you really break them down, are simple riffs. It's his timing, tone and funk that really make them special.
Being a Boston born and raised guy who went through adolescence with "Blow Your Face Out" and "Bloodshot" as my backing soundtrack and seeing Geils live at least once a year for about a decade makes my appreciation for Magic Dick all the more intense.
I'd love to hear about other legends that have that same kind of groove.
