Parchman Farm by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.

I don't know who's playing the harp on it, but it's pretty good.

The Fathers and Sons CD. The one with Muddy Waters and Paul Butterfield with Mike Bloomfield on guitar. That's an album which should be in every harp players collection. Of all the albums Butterfield did, I think Fathers and Sons has his best playing. Even better than the first two Butterfield Blues Band LPs.

@ Andrew
Andrew that is the great John Mayall himself on harp.
Have you heard his seminal album 'The Blues Alone' dedicated to JB Lenoir. John plays every instrument himself on this disc!
His harmonica has suffered in the last years as he's getting on a bit..

SMaxwell - Honesty is cool. I try to be honest unless I'm trying to amuse, in which case twisting the truth can work.

Harmonicanick - thanks. I don't know John Mayall very well. I'll check him out.

I am listening to Paul Thorn play I'm a Lucky Man. No harmonica, but I've never heard such a song before. It is a slow song with a wonderful melody about being grateful in life and yet it is so sad. Gotta' admit it has got hold of me and I've been playing it a lot. It is off of his abum from 2002 called Mission Temple Fireworks Stand.

jaymcc28...I think the best track on that Taj Mahal album is "Checking up on my baby" Better than Sonny boys version even IMHO.

@Oisin: I had those 2 tunes from a separate compilation album so I just went on line to check out the original album. I agree that "Checking up on my baby" is a good tune and right there along with "Leaving Trunk" and "She Caught the Katy"!

I really just discovered Taj recently and by accident while I was surfing www.lala.com. I'm listening to the album now. Good stuff.

You know Jay it's quite an easy song to play too...
I can bang a version of it out but not quite as good as Taj.
You should check Billy Boy too.

Oisin,

I've been listening to some Billy Boy recently. One of my favorite songs when I was a teenager full of angst was Blue Oyster Cults cover of "I Ain't Got You" (from "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" live album). I was a big Cult fan and just loved the guitar licks in that song. I'm also born and raised in the suburbs of Boston so I also loved Aerosmith's cover from "Live Bootleg". Once I picked up the harp I decided to see where the song 'originated' and I traced it back to Billy Boy. It could go farther back but I'm not sure. In any case, that got me listening to more of his music. He plays some simple yet effective harmonica pieces that don't scare a 'newbie' like me away from trying.

Yeah he's excellent Jay. The first Billyboy song I heard was "I wish you would" by the Yardbirds ... it also took me about 5 years to find out it hadn't been written by them. As you say some great licks to steal
in his songs. Best of all he's still going strong.
Maybe see him in the UK one day.
