Do you know who he is? I'll confess to near-total ignorance--except that, every now and then, somebody mentions his name in the same breath with three other names you'll recognize: Charlie Musselwhite, Paul Butterfield, and Paul Oscher.
Lupkin is, so to speak, the fourth great white guy from the early-60s period when Musselwhite and Butterfield were crossing over into the black scene in Chicago and Oscher was, I presume, starting to learn the stuff back in NYC that would propel him into the harp chair with the Muddy Waters Band by the late 60s.
Lupkin is back! Here's his website. He's an impressive guy; I've never caught him live, but this certainly makes me want to:

Damn, he was just in KC last Friday night too. I've never heard of him, but I might have gone if I had read about him earlier.

My very most favorite live recording featuring fat toned Chicago style blues harp is Bill Lupkin's "Live at the Hot Spot". Hearing him getting some really authentic stuff going on that gig had me keep my ears open for anything with Lupkin involved. He back up Nick Moss on one of his CDs (Lupkin records for Moss's BlueBella Records), but he was a little too low in the mix for me. I grabbed his CDs as soon as they hit the market and they are great. He has a great blues voice also. He toured extensively with Jimmy Rogers and is featured on the "Gold Tailed Bird" album that was released by Leon Russell's Shelter Records back in the day. You can grab those tunes on iTunes. Anyway--

Spot on JT! Bill Lupkin & the Chicago Blues Coalition, "Live at the Hot Spot" is my desert island disc. Not a weak cut the whole cd.I put this on up there with Hoodoo Man Blues. Essential listening.

Bill plays Chicago every couple of months (He lives in Indiana) and he's got a great tune called "Man or Mouse" on Barrehouse Chuck's 25 year anniversary anthology. On the harp he's old school extroirdinaire.

Those four tracks you get on his website have made me add yet more stuff to my CD wishlist. Like PB says, awesome! ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa

7 of us fron The Harmonica Club of Huntington went to see him at The Court Street Grill in Pomeroy,Oh. He's coming back in April, and our group is going again, though I wont do to a paying gig 100 miles away.
We had a good time in a classic small bar with good food at reasonable prices and lots of fine folks. Bill was backed by a drummer and 2 guitars (?no bass?) The music was loud and full of energy. They put out a fine sound that had you toe tapping all night. My wife bought his CD, so that says something. Catch him if you can.
