My feelings, there's something to be said about convenience, security, & availability.
Sure, probably is a pleasure playing a customized harmonica. Of this I have no doubt. Id be very happy to have one or two in my favorite keys.
But in life there will be circumstances you may not be able to get one for any number of reasons. Some included being on a trip away from your favorite customizer or even a mailbox, not having the money for a new customized harp but your last one just died, etc. Let's face it they arent readily available & definately not convenient with the turnover time after order.
Then comes the question of security. A handful of guys customize really well. What happens when they no longer are customizing harps? I dont see sign ups for the next batch to learn to do it.
For these reasons & others I think its best to learn to play harmonica with precision & skill on out of box harmonicas. They are convenient & available, most music shops carry them & theres many music shops around & manufacturing companies wont stop making them anytime soon. Okay, so every harmonica wont play great out of the box so its also important to learn how to adjust the gaps on harmonicas out of the box. Ive met a number of damn good players that dont play customized harmonicas.
Just my 2 cents.
