never tried either of those mics with a 7-100, sounds pretty good! how high did you have the volume knob?
i once played about half a night with one, lined to the p.a., after my regular amp had to be taken over by the rhythm player in the band. it worked out "okay". i was using an old cm green bullet so feedback was a real danger.
I had the volume knob on the Pignose at about 5:30 , almost half way wide open . It still had PLENTY of volume left . Thank you guys for checking out the video. Best Steve Harvell
Sounded good! Gorignak, I too have the standard "brown" pignose. The only difference between the two AFAICT is the covering. It seems to be the same circuit. I have a schematic if you are interested... (EDIT: one potential difference could be the speaker. This would make a definate audible change in the tone of the amp. I can neither confirm nor deny this, however.)
After seeing some great YT videos from Steve and other players demonstrating the awesome sounds of the Pignose, I was inspired to dust off my Dad's vintage 7-100. My plan was to use it as a practice/starter amp to familiarize myself with playing through a mic. I played my guitar through it a few years ago, and it seemed to work fine. It did have a scratchy volume pot as isaacullah mentioned above, but I thought a little contact cleaner would straighten out that issue.
Since I had not played through the amp in a while, I wanted to test it before/after cleaning and share the results on the forum. Unfortunately, I could not get it to power up...I tried batteries first, then a 9 v adapter...Damn it, no luck!
I am curious to know if this is common with the 7-100's...And, is it worth taking it in for repairs? I'm afraid the service charge might cost as much as a new amp...I would hate to try to fix it myself and make matters worse. Any thoughts?
BTW, I sent an email to the company yesterday afternoon, but they have not replied yet.
I use mics I built myself, including a "clone" of a bottle of blues. They all sound good, but probably higher Z mics will give you a dirtier tone than lower Z mics will.
@Chevus. I have a schematic if you want to tackle it yourself. It's not a horribly complicated circuit, but if you are not a "tinkerer" like me, you may find it bewildering... Let me know if you want the schem and I'll send it to ya... Probably the issue is with the input jack. It has a normally off switch that turns the circuit on. It gets loose over time and starts to not make contact when a jack is inserted. Mine is quite loose, and I periodically have to open it up and pinch the contacts back closer together to get it to turn on. You can get at it by unscrewing and pulling out the battery holder.
So kool to see that so many of you are into the little Pignose 7-100 amp. And yes I agree, the regular brown covered one has the same circuitry as the tweed version, but mine sound different from each other. I have at one had 2 "TopHat" Portly Cadets and 2 "Victoria" 518 (Champ Copy) and they sounded noticeably different. Even with the same brand tubes!
About 3 years ago my beloved HogNose20 went down on me and I brought another one and it just did not sound/react like the older one.All of the knobs were at different positions to get a similar sound?
But the Tweed 7-100 is a tad louder/more headroom before breakup than the brown one . But the brown one has a smoother distortion but the tweed has a rougher distortion but in a good way. That is why I came up with the idea of using my A/B/Y pedal and doing a side by side YouTube test.(I even switched batteries and power supplies and they still had their own basic sound?)
I will play thru one for a few seconds and then switch to the next one when I do the video.I bet the two together will sound GREAT! I am playing First Friday at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences April 3d with a fellow co-worker and he plays lap steel guitar and 1932 dobro.I talked him into using one of the Pignose amps today at practice, and man,the lap steel gave us both goose bumps thru the little piggie (the dobro the same). He is going out this weekend and buying one!
Steve, could it be that the new amp had not been 'broken in'? I use to sell home theater equipment, speakers and what not. I took note of very noticeable diferences which converted me to a "believer" of the whole "break in" (also known as burn in) fad. Perhaps the speakers of that amp just needed time, did you stick with it or discard it after?
So Steve, let me get this straight... You had two copys of a total of four different amps, and not a single pair sounded alike? That seems odd to me.
Has anyone else actually owned two copys of the same amp that sounded different from each other? I personally have owned two Roland Micro Cubes at the same time and they sounded alike to me.
Thank you, isaacullah. I was thinking of buying a bottle o' blues mic and using it with the little pignose. I've never owned a bottle o' blues before and I've been contemplating using it with the 7-100 straped on with a guitar strap for busking(playing on the street)purposes. All it would take would be one drop on the sidewalk to ruin a high dollar Green Bullet or a JT-30 mic. I've also thought about using the bottle o' blues with a little smokey amp on my belt but I don't think the little smokey would be quite loud enough for busking.
