Dude, ain't nothin wrong about usin an amp I was just being a jackass because my entry is already posted so I can't do it. hahaha! Gotta love the amps.
I sympathize with you about being a "work in progress". I believe something cool is in the making. Just keep playing man. You're doing good.
And sort out the gear thing man! Let me know if you really need help with that.
Zhin, why should you only be allowed to post one entry? If you want to have another go at it - go ahead (as far as I am concerned, anyway). You just have to choose one vid before the 30th... ;)
There is still a week to go. Keep on practicing, and take the amp if you feel like it.
... I actually thought that Dutchbones title "... (entry #1)" was refering to HIS first vid..
...so, if you feel like it, please have another go.
I don't think it's sincere of me to withdraw my entry and make a new one. Frankly I don't feel that it's necessary. I want to keep in the spirit of things and keep this at a minimal level as far as competitive behavior goes. That's what I believe in. It's ok what others want to do though.
I just don't believe it's a "playalong" or "jam" anymore if I actually study the track and compose something for it.
In fact, the entry I submitted was my 2nd take and 2nd time I ever listened to the backing track. I shot the first time too but when I listened to it I didn't quite like it (what'dya expect from the first time hearing it? lol).
To me that's the blues. I don't get second chances or 2nd takes on stage. And quite frequently those "pesky" guitar players like to pull surprises on you so it's good to get into the habit of just 1 or 2 takes. Or 3.. 4...5.. :D My point is, it's like golf. The less times the better.
I find if I study/record the song for too many times I lose a lot of fire for it.
Unfortunately there was a lil, lets call it, "discomfort" on this thread following a critique by buddha.
While some people can't wait to be criticised by two of the greats of this harp world... others might rather not like to feel the wrath of the monkey's paw... If you don't want to be criticised too much or if you want/or don't want people to focus on a certain aspect of your playing, etc... , just say so in the description of your vid.
Zhin, I know what you mean about losing the fire. I burned this to a CD and jammed to it in my drive to and from work for two weeks. And when I finally got around to recording it, it was almost like something I had to do instead of fun and off the cuff.
By the way, after the 24th bar it was totally improv, because I could NEVER figure out what I wanted to do with the damn song. So I guess I spent all that time analyzing and stressing and then still ended up just blowing what was on my mind at the time.
Anyway, I'm here to get better so bring on the monkey paw. I'm sure after the 24th bar I was "Cerebal Vomiting" too!
Preston, I can tell you went totally improv from 24th onwards and that was when things got very interesting for me. That's where my compliments came from.
I posted my entry tonight for a few reasons, but mostly because I was catching up on the forum and was pretty depressed by the latest drama. Bummed that Adam has bowed out. Thought I'd make a small contribution by only posting harp content--I'll keep my editorial thoughts to myself.
Help an old Luddite. I tried to upload a video, but it failed. Says it was wrong format. I edited in Windows Movie Maker. Is this the wrong format? All my text is there, but no vid.
I was a bit disappointed to to see a derivation of the French verb 'vomire' used with regard to someone's playing. I was also disappointed that kudzu won't be throwing in his two cents worth, but, I think I understand why.
My entry's going up at the last minute and I don't give a monkey's what anyone thinks about it. I thought the whole pont of this thing was that it was meant to be 'fun'; not a means by which someone could take the opportunity to cast the most derogatory view on someone else's playing that they could.
Anyway, I don't care. I'm gonna put up my entry up in the spirit of the thing and cast my vote in the same manner.
I thank isaacullah and GH for their work in setting the thing up and I hope that the forum survives to host many more. ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa
That's the spririt! Go for it! GH - You're right, I was planning to do another entry (#2) Zhin- I'd really love to hear you amped (and I'm sure I'm not the only one)
I'll be listening to the new entries later today (after work) ---------- DutchBones Tube

I took the liberty of renaming the videos... Dutchbones, I'm looking forward to your second entry. ---------- germanharpist, harpfriends on Youtube

Thanks GH, but it will be tough with the new entries though. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to come up with something "new". Especially Tuckster's vid is smoking.... hard to beat that..... ---------- DutchBones Tube
Buddha, I found your criticism of her to be very objective. It sounded like a teacher to a student. I knew what you meant by that sentence, but using such as repulsive word as "vomit" could only be felt as offensive. (You DO need tact, man. It's important.) Anyway, to my amatuer ears, it didn't sound like cerebral vomit, and I think she has a fine sense of blues.
I can tell that you meant well by your criticism. Just a poor choice of words in that sentence. Also, you know how she is. Maybe it wasn't wise to offer your criticism if she didn't ask.
I got a vid up today--I don't know if it's too late or not--but it's up there just the same--for better or worse. . .

Now that the deadline has passed to enter the contest, I would hope that people will continue to post their takes on the jam track. It would be interesting for people to post again to show the progress they've made. As soon as I'm able (in possession of a new computer) I'll try and post something. At the moment I'm financially challenged and the computer has to be a Mac, so its going to take a while. This particular jam kind of shows that it is just as hard, if not harder to play something slow with lots of space as it is to play something real fast.
blzlvr, I had a similar thought. When I've figured out how to run the jam track through the computer, so that it can be heard, I'm gonna do it again and put it on my channel. I think a few of us who entered had a problem with making it so that the backing could be heard properely; I suppose it's the sh*tty mic on laptops. ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa
mickil. I over dubbed the backing track with th audio recorded from the camera using windows movie maker. You can then fool with the balance of audio from the video itself and from the audio "overdub" to get a good sound. Seemed to work pretty well, and it was easy to get the overdubbed track to line up with the video audio by matching the first "peak" in the guitar intro. I imagine mac software (i-movie or whatnot) can do the same. ---------- -------------- The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
I use DVDVideoSoft all the time. I use Real Player to pull the video down to my pc. Then I use DVDVideoSoft to extract the audio in to an mp3 file. I then use Audacity to edit the mp3 file, like remove a lot of the 'commentary' from them so that I have a manageable mp3 file size.
