In the past week I have had the distinct pleasure to encounter two harp players I have not heard before, each representing an extreme. Most surprising was a short solo on a tune by Splinter Group that I stumbled upon and put in the IPod because its a really laid back blues that's fun to play with and I really liked the vocals...and there is a 12 bar acoustic harp solo in the middle that's about as casual as you can get with a tone as big as the muddy Mississippi. After spending some time playing along I googled the group and learned it's Peter Greens band (Fleetwoods Mac's first guitar player) with him singing and playing harp and very little guitar. Not bad for a 60 year old schizophrenic on his meds.

And then, for the first time, I heard Jason Ricci. I'll be layed up a while just reconciling everything.

You just got me thinking again about Peter Green. Back in the days when I was cr*p, I used to try and play his solo on 'Long Grey Mare'. I'll give it another go. Thanks for putting that in mind.

the specific Splinter Group tune with the solo is "When You Got A Good Friend"...the Robert Johnson classic.

I've listened to the 'old' Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac before they went rock/pop for a long time. Some of my favorite blues.

Another band/duo that did some great blues before going mainstream rock/pop was Hot Tuna, later to be better known as Jefferson Airplane.
