For all you Hohner Special 20 and Golden Melody players, I've just found out that you can now buy replacement reedplates. In the UK they can be found at
http://www.harmonicas-direct.com/Product/Acc34.asp
I expect they are available elsewhere too.
I've always stuck with Suzuki because I could get replacement plates but this means I may experiment with the Special 20 too now. They are only £12.99 per set. YeeHa!

I may be mistaken but I don't think the Special 20 is a MS (modular system)harp.

tooka, Thanks for that info. most useful, as a GM player.
By the way if you are in the UK, as I am, I can offer you very affordable customisation of your existing harps by a local guy here in Bristol. I have just had a G major GM done by him and it is really good. It takes about 2 weeks and includes embossing, polishing, gapping and fine tuning for under £30! Nick

@MJ
You're correct, it's not an MS harp, but that just means that the parts are interchangeable with other harps in the MS series. It doesn't mean you cannot replace reedplates.

I am still wondering idf the MS reedplates will fit a Specials 20. I did not see any reedplate replacements specifically for the Special 20. I would like to be able to just replace a reedplate if possible but don't want to order something I cannot use. Thanks for the info.

Why? there are special 20 replacement reedplates listed, just like Tooka says.

For what it's worth, a cheap Blues Band Cover will fit onto an even cheaper Piedmont reed plate/comb. The Blues Band Cover is nearly identical to the Special 20. The Piedmont's don't have great sound, but I don't know how much of that is the reeds (which someone might be able to retune) and how much is the covers (which you can replace.) I was wondering because you can get a package of 7 keys for the Piedmonts for $20-$30, which is cheaper than replacement reed plates. (The only Blues Band I've ever played was second hand and already had a blown reed).

For the most part SP 20's and Golden melodies are higher quality harps then the MS junk. Hohner did not plan it to be this way, but the people that work at the new factory just plain suck at what they do! That factory produces nothing but junk! The old factory still makes Marine bands, SP 20's, Golden Melodies and now Marine Band Deluxes. These are the harps you should consider useing.

Hi Guys, You can get single reeds for the SP20, they are the same as MB reeds. Google Harponline, a company in Germany. The price is half a Euro per reed. If you have any problem finding the page for reeds on their site email them, they are very helpful. If you have not changed single reeds before I would suggest that you experiment with an old harp to start with. I would also suggest that when working on reeds you work over a tray (other than when hammering in rivets) as it is all too easy to lose bits and pieces. If you have any problems riveting you can use a small nut and bolt (I use 12ba) to fix the reed as there is room on the SP 20 comb (you can't do this on a Marine Band, to use screws on these you would have to tap a thread into the reed plate & then cut off any protuding thread). Save your money and change the reed. Hope this helps
