Hello,
I have been playing the Harmonica for 3 years, I spent most of that time playing 1st poss tunes. I can play a few easy short blues tunes too, and now, I need to know about playing blues, as I want to try to make up a nice slow blues. I need to know if or not I can play a made up blues tune with it not being in a 12 or 8 bar blues format, I want to try to make up a blues tune, but I don't know if it has to be in 12 or 8 bar, or can I play free style?

Thank's for any help..

Rich.

Well Blues is usually in a twelve bar or eight bar progression. But, what do you mean by "free style?"

Well, there is such a thing as free-style poetry: No rhyme and/or no rhythm, but it still gives the intended effect (Think Jim Morrison's poetry), but I THINK blues is stricter than that that. A song can wail and moan, but if it ain't that 12 or 8 bar pattern and doesn't have question/answer, it ain't the blues.

I like some blues, but I certainly would not want to play ONLY blues.

Well there are blues songs that are 14 bars. I would still call it a blues as long as it has some recognizable structure to it. If the chord progression is somewhat close that famous I IV V, and the song is built around the blues scale, that's when I call it blues.

By free style do you mean more like rock n roll style, where the song is built around one main riff as oppose to chord progressions. And you don't need to worry about hitting the 2 draw with the 'I' chord or hitting the 4 draw with the 'V' chord? If yes, then I would say you are crossing over into rock and not blues.

Richard: If you have not done so already, you should check out Adams 'Front Porch Blues' video & the tabs available for download.

I dont think its necessary to play it note for note as per the tabs however its necessary to follow the structure & within this to go where you want.
