Hello Folks,

My name is Kevin and i am from Germany and i was at the large Music trade-Fair in Frankfurt. There at the Hohner booth, I met Steve Baker and he told me about a new Generation of haprs, which will be release this Summer:
The Hohner Crossover.
These new Harps are made of Bamboo instead of normal wood.
Of course the rest is metal ;-)

But as i was able to hear, the sound is much brighter and clearer than normal Marine Bands or Deluxe.
AND more interesting is the fact, that this Bamboo corpus should not suck itself full water and expand.
That means it is much more tighter and the air-leakage is smaller.

Plus: The Reedplates and Covers i think, too are compatible to Marine Band/ Deluxe

Another thing is, that Hohner is going forward in inventing special Harp Amps. One small 5 W Amp was already to be seen and there should be more in the future.

So much from the Music Fair in Germany from Hohner.

greetings kevin/Dr.Colossus

Welcome to the Forum Kevin.

That is some interseting news you have from Hohner. Did you try one of the harps yourself? what did you think of them?

Good user name by the way!

I haven't tried one by myself, but Steve Baker showed it to me compares to the MB Deluxe Harp. The sound is indeed brighter. And the Harp itself looks hm...good.

i don't know ..i just will try them out when they are released ^^ I dont know about the price but i think they will be somewhere around 50 euros..

What does a normal/Deluxe marine band cost in the US or whereever you guys live ?
a normal Marine band in germany is at 27 Euros and i just bought a Deluxe for 44 Euro.

1 USD = 0,741 Euro

Here in the USA, a Hohner Marine Band harmonica costs about 30 dollars and a Marine Band Deluxe averages about 50 dollars. I don't know what those prices are in euros.

$30= 20.27 pounds

$50= 33.78 pounds

$30= 22.31 Euro

$50= 37.18 Euro

Interesting that the guys who live across the pond, over where the harps are made, seem to pay more for them. . .

@oldwailer

It would make me happy if that only applied to harps. Everything on this side of the pond is much much much more expensive ;)

This side of the pond. You must be English. I love that saying.

Downunder they will no doubt cost a bomb. Marine Bands are A$46 Deluxe MBs A$59. Why bamboo? Why expensive? Why better? Bamboo is really cheap ie it grows like a weed.

Think I will stick with the Suzukis and Lee Oskars. On the subject of Suzuki has anyone tried the Suzuki Fabulous which is very expensive and which, I guess, is aimed at taking business away from customisers?

Marine Bands at A$46. Aussiesucker, how did you get that deal. Down here in Melbourne I'm paying A$55 for a decent harp unless I go with the Big River at 40 dollars. And where are you finding MB deluxe's. I dont think the shops down here have even heard they exsist. I just wish I didnt get ripped off when I buy some harps. Money is tight enough as is

Sorry for the rant

Not only that... just try to FIND a Suzuki harp here in Japan in a music store..... Hohners, Tombos, yes no problem, Suzukis..... no way.... very hard to find and if you DO, expensive... go figure...
I bought cheaper Suzukis in Europe..

TheLastPeanut: Noticed only 2 weeks ago when I purchased a Lee Oskar for $46 at a local store in Brisbane that they had Marine Bands for the same price. Was told that the Lee Oskars were going up in price to just under $60. I dislike the Marine Band at any price. Saw the Marine Band Deluxe advertised on the net locally for$59 but like everything else it has probably risen in price. Can still get Bluesmasters for $36 which have to be a quantum leap up from Big Rivers. Check out MandoHarp on the net.

A year back I was buying Harps from the US when our A$ was par with the US$. Paid between $15 & $19 for Bluesmasters, Harpmasters, SP20s & Marine Bands. That was when times were good. Fortunately I have plenty of harps now to last me for a long long time.

Oldwaier...DaDoom is right, everything over here is more expensive. Petrol or gas, as you guys call it, is about the equivelant of $9 a gallon and a pack of 20 cigarettes about the same price.
I paid about $70 for a MB deluxe. That's why I started buying used harps off ebay and I've bought quite a few from the US site and it's still cheaper, even after shipping. Bringing up kids and a harp addiction in the UK is an expensive business.

Hey...there might be a business opportunity for someone out there....If only I could think of something that's less expensive here than in the States????

Sounds to me like Hohner is experimenting with outsourcing more production to China. Bamboo is cheap and more eco/sustainability friendly (grows so quickly). Bamboo could be locally sourced, but pearwood would have to be imported.
