I got one a while back and was not really thrilled about the sound. WAY too much high end. I emailed the company and they replied saying they had done some mods for several people who wanted more bass response. These were mods to the shell and not the electronics. Essentially trying to increase the volume inside the shell.
Soon after, I found a JT30 shell with a green bullet element on ebay for a reasonable price and took a gamble which turned out OK. As a result I never had the mods and haven't played the Retro Rocket more than twice since then.
That brings us to today when I decided to see if I could make it a usable mic. I decided to turn the volume knob into a tone knob and dial off some of those harsh highs.
I'm pretty pleased with my results and would be glad to share with anyone exactly what I did. If the house wasn't already asleep, I would film something for youtube showing the results. I guess I'll try to do that later.
If any of you guys who actually know what you're doing on the inside of a mic think of a better way to do this, feel free to make suggestions ie which cap to use. I just rewired the existing 500K pot using a .022 cap I had laying around from my guitar parts stash.
Yes Scott I have a retro rocket and like you I don't use it for the same reasons. Very dissapointing; I have an old green bullet which I use now. I would not want to take a mic apart myself, but I might get a specialist to look at it, now you have made your suggestion, thanks.
Thanks for posting that. Sounds pretty good with some of the edge rolled off. If you found a happy medium tone wise couldn't you just measure the resistance of the pot at that setting and use a fixed resister with the cap before the volume pot to retain it as a volume pot? You got me thinking what I can do to my Superlux with my Epi Valve Junior. :)
