so I'm a beginning harp player and wanted some advice...
I've been playing for a couple weeks now, learning mostly from the youtube videos of adam and others. I can play single notes solidly at this point, doing mostly tongue-blocking because that's what came the most naturally. I've also learned how to bend the draw 4 and made some really good progress on bending draw 3 yesterday.
I have recently been trying to master the blues scale, hitting somewhat of a wall while trying to articulate the 4-draw from the 4-draw bent (aside: how do you articulate well while tongue-blocking?)
Anyway, I was wondering, what next? I definitely need to put many more hours into the basics, master bending, the blues scale, etc. But what do I do when I can do these things pretty solidly? In particular, how do I go about learning how to improv/play riffs. From what I've gathered, alot of blues playing is just variations on the blues scale, but I could use some more specifics.

after you got all that down, start learning some licks/riffs. also try makin up your own stuff useing the blues scale. after that download some backing tracks an try playing along with that keeping beat. as for the scales though you wanna be to a point where you can just pick up the harp an play in through nice an clean with out any effort. once you can do that makin up your own stuff will come easy.

I'm also a beginner, but a little further along. I would say it's well worth your investment to get Prof. Gussow's beginner 4-pack video lesson from his online store, and work your way through that, and then pick and choose from his other lessons. At $7 a pop (video lesson and tab), these will help you much more than his free YouTube videos because they are really tailored to your developing skill level. Because I'm working through these lessons, I am not hitting any roadblocks. I am making great progress every time I practice.

Hey Dan, welcome to the forum :)
I don't know what to tell you on how to continue (I'm a really bad teacher). But I think I help you out with articulation and tongue blocking thing. A friend gave me a really neat advice lately when I had the same question. He said that I should articulate by saying "kaka" or "k k" instead of "tata" or "t t".
Anybody, correct me if I'm wrong... (no big TBer myself). ---------- germanharpist, harpfriends on Youtube
