I stumbled upon this thread about memorable stories and got a bit of a kick out of it. I thought I'd try rejuvenate it.

I'll kick things off with an innocuous little anecdote about the first open mic I did (August 2007) at the Barleycorn Club in Cape Town. It was a little pick-up ensemble formed in my brother's back yard; I'd been diddling on the harmonica for a few months without much to show for it. I could play clean notes but hadn't even heard of bending 'em.

Someone gave me their old harmonica -- one of those Hohner Weekender tremolos. You'll note, I also had yet to be told that it's disgusting to use someone else's second-hand harp. This thing had been lying around in the attic for a decade or two, so it seemed harmless enough and I gave it a few toots and it made a noise. Maybe not a great noise, but what the hell did I know.

What I couldn't quite come to terms with, though, was the hint of dust I got with each draw note, and my sheer inability to get a note out of the lowest three holes. It was only on the day of the gig that I realised why. I had a little look in the harp and found... a hornet's nest. In my harmonica.

Christ, what admirable people they were in that audience. We should have been lynched for the noise we made. .

So who's got a story to share?
