C-bonetalker, that's great that you also play violin! I was at Don't Tell Mama's last night. Each night, they have someone different on piano. Last night, Eric James was there. And we decided to do "Georgia" again. That seems to be a favorite. I did it in a very bluesey/improvisational style.

Buddah, you say that we are idiots for being too sensitive. I "slightly" agree. Not completely.
What we need to focus on mainly as part of this forum is to learn harp. But we also need to focus on making the forum at least seem in writing "friendly" and welcome to other posters with questions.
I'm sure that one of the points of this forum was to welcome new harpers.
The fact is that there are other harp forums online. If this one "seems", even "falsely seems" unfriendly then timid people might not join us. There is like 3 billion people in the world, you can't expect everyone to accept your way of thinking. And then call all of us idiots when "some of us" not all of us seem sensitive or thin skinned to you.

You say that YOU accept the statements for what they are..... But would you say these things to your mother and expect her to say oh, I am who I am so I accept your statement and am not hurt at all.

aaagh!

Rachelle, I sincerely apologize if I may have offended you by accidentally spreading a lie!!! (the lesbian thing).

Now that I got that out of the way...

Welcome to the MBH forums!

And BTW, I really like your playing and flow. It's very unique and sensitive.

I've always appreciated what you play since I first discovered your videos on Myspace sometime about a half a year ago. You're awesome!

And yeah, you could be a gay pirate from outer space for all I care and I'd still think of you the same way! It doesn't matter to me as long as you play GOOD MUSIC. But yes I believe you when you say you're not a lesbian!

I have to say... I agree with Miles.

Christelle (unfortunately) removed a couple of posts from the forum because of you, chris.

I don't care if it was justified or not or who did what, but fact is the posts would still be up if it weren't for you. So its definately a problem with you and not with her.

So, keep it real to yourself, but at least try to make this a happy place...

well she does that... she does that where ever she goes. The problem is her NOT me. Look at the facts not the drama nor attention seeking behavior.

She's upset because I took the time to critique her entry. I offered her very valuable advice on how to improve her playing and she calls it disrespectful.

Look at her posts compared to mine... did she try to help you guys? NO. She says she doesn't compete and then makes a video response to the french guy doing the sonny terry style thing.

She enters the harp friends contest.

I am here to help all of you and I believe I ever took some private time specifically for you didn't GermanHarpist.

So I'll say it again, I DON"T need to be here, I gain nothing from being here other than the opportunity to help you guys be better players. I enjoy teaching and I enjoy helping others. It's not my issues that several of you have thin skin and are overly dramatic. Not everybody agree with me and I don't expect them to but many people do. read the responses.

I am not here to tell you how great you are, I am here to help you be as great as you can be.

Bienvenue a MBH, Rachelle. Tu es une musicienne formidable -- heuresement, tu a le sens de l'humour formidable aussi. Les gars ici, ils sont génial mais certaines personnes sont plutôt vieux jeu.

(If I got it right: Welcome to MBH, Rachelle. You're a pretty awesome player, and fortunately you've also got a healthy sense of humour. The guys here are cool but some of us are a little old fashioned.)

The above post came over a little bit harsher than intended. Don't take it the wrong way. We all respect your helping nature, and from what Ive heard and experienced myself you are a very relaxed guy.

Another thing is obvious: You are an outstanding teacher. I haen't seen a lot of your teaching, but from the little I HAVE seen (no suckup, seriously :) it is my dream to have lessons from you someday.
You are very focused, very analytical, I could go on....

However, I also care about this forum (because I like it here). And when I see stuff I cannot stand for I point it out.

And well, as far as I remember the last time you criticisesd Christelle she said something like: "...having lessons from you. PUKE". So why keep on going... I just don't understand. There are so many people on this forum that would love to be criticised by you. Why waste the time with people that don't?

GH,

She's upset about the harpfriends contest entry. I wouldn't have critiqued any of her vids in any other thread. BUT that thread is one where you guys appointed me as a judge. I have given critiques on quite a lot of them. The critque was fair and honest. I urge you all to watch her vid with my notes in hand to see what I am talking about.

There is NO disrespect in taking time to evaluate somebody's playing second by second. If she didn't want to be judged, she shouldn't have entered. That said, her entry was one of the top performances.

But the question is, should it be excluded to beginners and non-professionals only? I mean you wouldn't think it's right if I or Adam entered do you?

As a newcomer to the forum I found most of the posts funny and very entertaining.

Music has different functions. To my way of thinking the purpose of music is enrichment.

I come from a modern jazz background sax/done plenty of blues sax as a pro.
I play blues harp kind of OK.

So I listened to the Artist in question.

It depends what level I am coming in to listen to it at and the unit interaction (thats musically ).
Some could say that it was utter rubbish others could say it was brilliant.

The fact is did you like it or not.And really at the end of the day thats all that matters.

May be this artist should be played again for a couple of thousand blind people and let them judge.

I go back to what i believe to be one of the main functions of music, enrichment.

@Buddha: I don't see any problem with that. There might be a slight conflict of interest if you or Adam participated ;). Otherwise I would say the contest is open for everyone.

I thought her vid was very interesting. Just to see her take on Oldwailer Piedmont guitar style, which sounds simple but is really quite a challange.

I would even go a step further: I'd be very interested hearing you and Adam have a shot at the backing track. Maybe after the competition has finished, I'm sure it would be very educational to alot of us.

As I have beeen reading this thread, it has struck me as an ongoing string of shallow, halfhearted apologies, and too strong protestations from infants who can't stand to be either wrong or in 2nd place.
Is this what harping is?

On a side note, that is a real nice bit of playing by Rachelle Plas.

"I think you all are a bunch of idiots".
You can't just shoo this away by saying things along the lines of, I'm just being blunt don't be offended. What? You're offended? You can't be offended. You're stupid.

Can you answer what I asked before. Would you be brutally hohnest with your Mother, and expect her not to be offended. Or do you think she would she just say oh, I accept who I am. It doesn't bother me.
Would You be offended?

How does it look to newcomers?

germanharpist,

there is little version of me doing it live with ray and issac in my little shop of horrors and the mighty monkey fist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj-rJ_9QtUI

Also to respond to your question on whether or not she knew I was a judge, she entered the contest and by doing so it's assumed the rules are known.

As posted in the original thread
Contest rules as I see them so far are as follows:

1) Record a video of yourself playing along to the backing track.

2) Upload said video to harpfriends, by March 31st (EDIT! the new dealine is April 30
!). Make sure you add it to the correct playlist (called "harpfriend's playalong contest"_ so that it will be included in the above player

3)Somehow a winner will be chosen. (EDIT! ADam and Chris will chose an over-all winner and perhaps a few runners-up. Forum members will also vote on the submissions and a "members choice" winner will also be decided). First prize is bragging rights.

Miles, how does it look to new comers? It looks like you're all a bunch of idiots. Seriously anybody with half a brain can see that everybody is spouting on about stupid shit.

And to answer your question about my mother. Yes, I've told her to fuck off. My dad too. Like I said, I am true to myself first and then all others around me.

When I was in 2nd grade, I went to a catholic grade school. I pretty have always know religion is a bunch of garbage designed to control people since I was born. I recall being in trouble for telling the nun how wrong they were about everything in this world. I explained to them how things are when you allow yourself to be connected to the source.

So I got a beating from one of the nuns and then I threw a book at her face for hurting me. I was kicked out of school for that.

When you are at total peace Miles, allow the calm to supercede everything and then listen. That's the world we are all from.

I saw that clip and it was very helpful. What I meant though was the backing track itself. After studiing it for a month it would be nice to know what the "right answer" is...

I forgot to post the 3rd rule in the new HPC thread. I will do it right away...

well I don't have a right answer for that. My blues kung fu is not as good as most on this board. I get seriously exposed after about two choruses and then start playing a bunch of bs that I would call cerebal vomit (that terms applies to me too)

tiny point of information (unless my own memory is going): I think Chris used the word Puke first (in the context of Christelle's accompaniment of Peter Gabriel), and Christelle was responding to that.

I remember giving a lecture on the pathophysiology of alcoholism and pointing out that the first area of the brain that is affected by the consumption of alcohol is the inhibitory center. I sometimes wonder if head-shakes (this would not apply to Chris as he hates the ubiquity of head-shakes) have the same effect when I read some of the bombastic "non-harp'' related posts on some of these forums. All belief systems have their own set of justifications and different energies, e.g., dynamic aggressive vs. passive, etc, express themselves in different ways so it often seems futile (and non-accepting) to try to change another's belief system.......For the record (and i know this is masturbatory because who really gives a sh%#t) I myself cannot stand "It's only a joke" victim humor and honor my sensitivities by accepting them and having friend's that have the same approximate baseline sensitivity. To further reveal myself I'll admit I have a temper that likes to express itself physically and wonder how many would defend themselves and their opinions if they were physically present for each other. p.s. Damn that girl can play! And no doubt galvanizes her audiences with her energy (how many of us do that?) Dennis

I think the funniest part of this thread is that the guy who started all the "controversy" is a total lier. Then he defends himself by saying he doesn't see what the big deal of saying that Rachelle is a lesbian and it's part of who she is, then Rachelle herself has to come here and inform everybody that she is not in fact a lesbian.LOL. What an idiot, he also claims that he knows her personally, when in reality Rachelle has no idea who he is. Haha, good times.

I notice it. But I am glad I checked it out because I got to see a great vid of a excellent harp player.

But i was shocked to see a false accusation and subsequent backpeddleing and a incredibley stupid lesbian joke that the poster defended with all sorts of stupidity and justified it by saying he was off to see a gay harp player. a lot of silly comments by white straight males, who just don't know when to sit on their hands and shut the fuck up.
