Some of you may have seen my Retro Rocket mod thread.

Well, I was messing around last night, rewiring it to get the volume knob back and just put the cap in the circuit.

I got it all wired up and it sounded GREAT but a lot of voume was lost. I decided to try something a little different and this time NO OUTPUT.

I put it back to the old way, NO OUTPUT.

I took out the pot and just went element to jack, NO OUTPUT

I tried element to PLUG, NO OUTPUT.\

Did I fry my element with heat while soldering?

Is there any fix or am I in the market for a replacement element?

More than likely I'm afraid. Crystals don't like heat.

I'm not that upset. I never tinker around with anything I'm not willing to screw up. Now I've learned my lesson and I won't overheat anymore elements.

There are lots of ways to ruin a crystal! Be sure to use a heat-controlled soldering iron. Pre-tin the leads and the lugs. Then place lead on log and apply heat just until the solder flows and get the hell out of there.

a tribute to your element:

"draw 2, draw 2, blow 4 hold, draw 2, blow 4, blow 5....."

Zhin - LOL!

Jon - with all due respect that is NOT a good way to solder. The rosin/flux in the solder disappears VERY quickly and if the the components aren't pre-tinned there is no guarantee that your method will produce a good solder joint. It is possible for that ball of solder to mechanically trap the wire next to the lug, but it will be a "cold" solder joint and will fail quickly. The heat and materials involved in soldering create oxidation very quickly and the oxides interfere with a good joint.
