Last night had a band rehearsal and finished early because the drummer was sick and did not make it. Went on to the local blues jam; a record 8 harp players!!
Anyway called in at the local pub around midnight for a nightcap (whiskey) and the landlord and partner were in black and were totally hammered and she was in tears because they had just had her fathers funeral.
She said play me something...so I thought hmm this is a minor moment and played summertime in Am in the pub garden under the stars, and she said it helped.

that is a sad but sweet story nick.

some years ago i had a truly great friend, i had known just a few months. he played keys, i play harp, and we worked with the same band. we became fast friends and hung out together a lot. we did the road thing with the band, we were the little rock contingent, others were from other places, so he and i got very tight. one friday i got a message from his wife to call, i did and no answer. finally she called me again from her in-laws home with the news- robin had passed away. her only request for me was to play at his memorial service. i instantly knew what to play, and enlisting the guitarist/leader of the band, we worked out "sitting on top of the world" to play. it came off well and helped to comfort his grieving widow and family.

music is something that crosses all boundaries and can give a comfort that mere words cannot.
