I was curious what is everyone's take on their style, and usage of their speed?

Sugar Blue is better in every possible way as a harp player alone.

John Popper has some better vocal technique. Well I suppose he deserves credit for exploiting delay to make it sound like he plays a lot of notes (something all delay users are guilty of). I do think he's one of the most skillful with the delay.

Well, I am a Popper fan, but not a huge fan. I think he spends alot of time on those high "pretty" notes, and not alot of time in the Blues scale. I've seen a transcription of his solos in "runaround" and I really don't know if he's using a scale at all. He just threw something together that sounded good and rolled with it. I don't have a big opinion of Sugar Blue. I haven't heard any of his recorded works, and the only Ytube video I really care for is his version of Hoochie Coochie Man.

Although they are both very talented idividuals,I prefer Jason Ricci's speed and style over both of these guys!

Ricci speed is incredible I'm (Don't kill me) just not a fan of overblows. But don't get me wrong I'm Sugar Blue's #1 fan just on takes of speed styles.

IMHO I find Sugar Blue to be much more soulful than Popper. To my ears, Popper is doing the same 3 or 4 pentatonic runs on the high end of the harp every song. I think Jason Ricci, Marc Ford, Billy Gibson, and Pat Ramsey do (or did) a much better job with the fast stuff than Blue or Popper.

Don't forget that Blues traveler is the band Popper fronted and they were an exceptional band in their heyday - just listen to Brother John the last cut on Blues Traveler 4
I love both their stuff

Personally I like Blue simply because he sounds more "bluesy" and Popper, while being incredibly fast - sometimes sounds like a speeded up bloody Spongebob Squarepants theme tune or something.

Ricci is miles ahead of both of them though. He's the Dereck Trucks of the harp.

They both play fast. Fast is fast. Sugar blue plays fast and accurate. Accurate like putting a signature on each note. Some of his fast and accurate playing is amazing and he constantly uses the ENTIRE 10 holes with equal skill. Popper plays fast. As accurate as he seems is necessary. Voice? I listen to the harp playing. Popper needs to sing with his music. Sugar blue make a statement with the harp. Some of his singing is a little higher than he should try to go. I would say Sugar is a great harp player and popper is a successful one. They both have their place. I have cd's of both. Play sugar's a LOT. His version of HELP ME is amazing to me.

Hey Ricci is awesome but truly I prefer his slower works, like The Way I Hurt Myself recorded or Broken Toy. This is his soul at best.

Slow is good but if you are going to play fast, do it right or don't do it. Jason ppayed near here a week ago but I had company already planned and could not go! I was disappointed.
