I just received my Solist Pro in the key of A from Dave Payne, and I must say that this is the best out of the box harmonica I have purchased. Granted I only have two other harmonicas, SP20 and a MB. The Solist definitely blows the MB away (IMHO). I can't compare with a MB Deluxe, but for the lower price and a sealed comb, I'm sticking with Seydel.

I had the exact same experience! I must also say that Dave Payne was really great to buy from. He is a stand up guy. ---------- -------------- The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"

Well, I've been working it out for the last few days and I agree with HB and Isaacullah. Bought a Solist Pro in A from Dave Payne as well and love it! I have MB's, SP20, Suzuki Harpmasters and a Big River. The Seydel, right out of the box is right up there with my favorites (tweaked MB's and SP20's). Love the look, the feel, the tightness, the tone and the responsiveness at both low and high volume.
Thanks Dave

I'm tellin' ya, Seydel is the way to go, and Dave is definately your go to man to get 'em! I'm glad all of you are having the same positive experience that I had. It's a breath of fresh air, isn't it?
Cheers,
Isaac

I have keys A Bb C and D. nice harps. Frankly the A is the best one of mine but they are all very nice indeed.

How ergonomic is the top cover plate on the Solist Pro? Specifically the left edge where it looks like there's a seam. I've found Special 20's and Lee Oscars can have a sharp enough edge to be worrying when tongue blocking. It doesn't seem as noticeable to me when lip blocking/pursing - I'm talking about the edge being in contact with the lips in case that's not clear. The 1849 has a nice design but it's more than 2X the price and I'm not sure that the stainless reeds are worth it. And the standard blues session isn't all that much cheaper.

I've said it before, but my Seydel Solist Pro (in Bb) is a heavy, solid, beautifully made, nice-to-look-at dead object, whereas my MBs are aliiive, I tell ya!

Andrew,
You said your Marine Bands are alive. Your Solist Pro is dead.
It appears that you suffer from what I call Narrow Reed Syndrome. I suffer from this same condition.. There are some players who get used to narrow reeds and resist making an adjustment to wider ones. Seydel has been using two basic slot lines since the 1800s, a wide and a narrow. Most of their stuff today is the wide and the reeds are wider than an MBs. The Solist still has the narrow slot configuration, which is actually narrower on few reeds than the MB. I grew up on Marine Bands, this is why I play the Seydel Solist.
Or you could have gotten a bad Bb. Who knows?
