I couldn't help but notice the unusual looking wireless mics in use on American Idol, which I happened to watch last night (I'm not a regular.) Being the diligent dude I am, I did some research, because I've never seen them before. They're Sennheiser SKM 5200 mics.

HOLY CRAPOLA!!!! They're $2500. EACH!!!!!!

I was hoping for harp application - but...... (turn your Emily Litella filter on now) Never Mind.

Is it worth it? $5000 is a lot of money for a single mic!

no stage mic is worth that much. your singing live its never gonna be perfect anyway. unless you an opera singer or something. something like that is the only way i could see some one useing a mic worth $5000 to sing live.

edit: but i guess if you on american idol the judges gotta hear them as clear as possible.

holy crap I'd rather save $2400 and get a nice sm 58 any day if i were a singer- i could never hold that expensive mic knowing the price- i'd be afraid to even get finger prints on it

I would imagine that a modern TV studio of that size must be a nightmare in terms of radio frequencies and sources of interference. People expect the performance to be crystal clear and in this situation if anyone's vocals are not right up there at the top of the mix it's a deliberate attempt to hide a weak singer (I've seen it done on the British X-Factor - I won't name names). It's not the Ed Sullivan show, folk are watching it in HDD with 5.1 stereo surround sound. The audience expects it to sound like a CD. I think $2500 under the circumstances is pretty good.

Anyone try the Singing Machine from radio Shack $ 20.00

Use your own mic plugged into the the belt mounted transmitter pack and the receiver is a std 1/4 " plug which can jack into a board or your amp's input.

The mic is one that is worn over the ear with the mic on a boom but that is easily modified or as I said ... I have used dynamic and crystal mics with equal success.... the range is about 25 ft......

Hey sundog, I've always look at that. I know it's no quality enough or professional level gigging, but I wonder if it might do well for low level gigs and just foolin around in the basement with some friends?

It can be had online for as low as $12. That's damn cheap.

Greg... I was checking those wireless mics out too. Too big and too expensive !

I love plugging my Samson Airline AF1 bug transmitter into my harp mics (like the Blowsmeaway Ultra SM57), and various bullet mics. Good enough for me.

But after reading some posts on Harp-L about the upcoming all-digital switchover, I wonder how much longer I'll be over to use it before the Feds start scanning the neighborhood for harp player interrupting who-knows-whose digital radio signals!
