Being new to the forum and reading many of the posts I thought of something that might facilitate the forum.
Some posts start with
"well wev'e all read the type of question before don't want to go down that ave etc" or something like that.

Perhaps a catalog of key questions already covered should put on a link. A lot of sites do but I am not sure that would work here.

The site evolves on new folk joining all the time so every couple of months or so of course the same things at times will crop up.
So if you are one of the harp veterans who have answered the question many times before may be just ignore it and let someone new come along and handle it.

That way it works and at the same time can reinforce the learning of the savants. So then if the savants feel the need to respond to the end of such a thread it can open up new ground ie things that hadn't otherwise be thought of.

Does this make sense or am I talking garbage. Interested in everyones views. Its OK I can handle it ha ha.

It's a good idea. Actually implementing it is a little tricky, giving the (relative non-)functionality of this particular board, but I have an idea.

Are you familiar with the forum search function on the last page of this website? I just tried the phrase "custom harps," in quotes, and came up with the following:

http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&client=google-coop&cof=FORID%3A13%3BAH%3Aleft%3BCX%3AModern%2520Blues%2520Harmonica%2520Search%2520Engine%3BL%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fcoop%2Fintl%2Fen%2Fimages%2Fcustom_search_sm.gif%3BLH%3A65%3BLP%3A1%3BVLC%3A%23551a8b%3BGFNT%3A%23666666%3BDIV%3A%23cccccc%3B&adkw=AELymgXOthlNW2vZug0o_T18XCGbACkltpFO4SzVAgL-wbtpcK1ZatRWnh_k0rGiWgxprSmAgObAiKJK5JaY6g0cYvWfFGPBDzd-D0dmnlT6BbK8c3R9J1GsJa3fZcAdsGgXEsUXaXnHx5-mN1SniUp79D5aQlyeCSMnlrZOGmQczmFxmO_-w97UGaPXNJLi5BhEYIHV_bHm&boostcse=0&q=%22custom+harps%22&btnG=Search&cx=016469647235914350511%3Anief0p3aauu

That's quite a mouthful, as links go. But that's one way I could do what you're asking.

Suppose you came up with a list of 5-10 topics, searched them through this search engine, and came up with the 5-10 threads that have the most relevant information? You could email me those thread-links in an email. I could then list them on a new "board FAQs" page, with stable hyperlinks (rather than the cut-and-paste variety I've given you here).

Or the forum search page could become the forum search & FAQs page, with those stable hyperlinks arrayed just below the search engine.

Back to you.

It's a great idea.

Could those Official trading threads get links too - they tend to get lost after a few days without a bump.

Kudzurunner:
Yea had a look for the first time at the forum search and its very good but may be not immediaely apparant to some new users ie me for one to check out possible duplicate topics, or have the inclination.

Obviously others will have differentt ideas but I think the frequently asked questions (FAQ)would probably do it from my point of view.A new user like me would easily spot that.
Did a quick check on the search and certainly these are the fist 5 I came up with.

1. HARP TUNNINGS.Harps tunings ( which has presently interesting thread going)

2.AMPS As expected loads on this subject big catagory may be sub on solid state/valve.

3.Harp positions, modes etc shed load on this could be some confusion with positions and modes.

4. CUSTOMISING HARPS.

5.WHICH HARPS ARE BEST for blues.
Better change that to WHICH HARPS FOLK FAVOUR and why. ,

otherwise where I come from we would say it could cause trouble at mill.
Sadly there are hardly any mills left but that is another story.

If thats the kind of thing. Oh the links you need
I can quickly go back and get those forgot

This is one of those cases where, even as I want to serve harp players, I need to ration my time.

You do the research. Let this thread start a discussion about which threads, treating which important topics, deserved to be archived with a set of stable links.

When the verdict is in--not just your suggestions, but your suggestions chewed over by members of the board--and you've arrived at, say, ten fantastic/memorable/informative threads that deserve to be highlighted, send them to me in an email (asgussow@aol.com), with links (URL's) right next to them or just below them. I.e.,

CUSTOM HARPS:
http://www.modernbluesharmonica...............

..or whatever.

I'll take it from there. Creating the links is indeed webmaster's work, and I'm the major domo.

You've raised a great question, in other words, but you'll need to do some of the work--as you've already begun to do--and the members of this board will have to do the rest. This board isn't for me; it's for its members.

I assume this process will take at least a few days, maybe more. I don't want to archive YOUR links--your selection, I mean--although of course I'm happy that you've made the initial suggestion you did and gotten the ball rolling. I want to archive links that members of the board have, by some sort of discussion process and acclamation, agreed upon. That's how democracies work. I honor the people's voice.

i donno if this forum has the option but what most forums do is "sticky" a thread so it allways stays at the top. or you could seperate the forum into sections for amps, mics, tuning, general, videos, etc...
anouther thing you should put
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/page/page/5560960.htm
the link to the main page of the forum that you see when you open a thread. put that link on the main page on top the forum so you dont have to hit the refresh button or look for the link on the left. thats anouther common thing. i donno about other people on here but i leave the forum open 24/7 an just refresh it on occasion to see if theres any new posts.

Here's a great thread for "just starting out" and "which harp to get"
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/376625.htm

---------------------------------

Here's an interesting thread weighing in on custom harps:
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/405627.htm

---------------------------------

Here's a good thread about bending and general questions for beginners:
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/396723.htm

---------------------------------

Here's a thread about that elusive 2 draw:

http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/386417.htm

-------------------------------------

This is a good idea and will make things easier for newcomers as well as the archival of worthy threads.

I think the forum search works OK. I've used it a few times before asking something I thought might have been covered before.

I must admit it's not quite as sofisticated as the one on Bushman's forum - traitor, I hear you say. But it does get the job done with a bit of finger work.

I know you can download and install search engine programs, but, having designed some websites, including an online shop, I know it's never as straightforward as it first seems to get these things working properly. The last time I checked the rates, most web developers in the UK were charging at least £40 P/H for that kind of work.

I'll admit the forum search isn't brilliant, but, it's no worse than using Google cos it is using Google.

So I am gonna really test my limit to stupid questions for the week. Here goes anyway... How do you use the forum search? Or more appropriately where is the textbox to put the keywords for the search? When I hit the link in the left panel that is called "forum search" all I get is a screen with a picture by Matthias Talmeier. No textbox for search items at all... What am I missing?

snakes, I've had that happen a few times. Just re-loading the page has always fixed it. I think it's cos the code for the box is requested from Google, so it either lags behind or simply fails to load.

LR, explain! You've lost me there.

Kudzurunner: Adam a quick update

15 posts well 16 with this one.
From the 15, 4 were mine and 2 yours so with an estimate of say 200 members thats approx 5% or less expressing any interest at all.
So it appears nearly everyone is happy and content with the current forum search.

I bow out gracefully

Not so fast Sopwith

I thought it was a good Idea! I just have nothing to add. I wonder how many of the 200 are beyond the FAQ stage, therefore haven't spoken up because they don't feel it effects them.

Same here,... I think it's a very good idea.

I barely use the search function after a couple of discouraging efforts...

Also, if you think about it : we are closing in the 1500 threads on this forum. Theres a lot of knowledge... (mixed with a lot of less important info).

I think the best would be to search for threads with information and to categorize them. This would be more than was suggested by Adam (who wanted one thread per topic), but I don't think that there are so many threads that summarize all information of a topic...

So I would say if we really want to create an archive of the forum... we should separate the 1500 threads in chunks of e.g. 100 threads. Then we'd have to find 15 people read through them, get the threads with information, catogarize them and write a little description.

We could do it in html and then simply give adem the file (or even better just the url, so that the archive can easily be updated).

GermanHarpest:Been in the studio all afternoon just got out and read your post. Man that sounds brilliant. I was happy to do something depending on the interest.
Its quite time consuming I'm sure but thats going to be extremely beneficial to all of us, thanks.

I think Adam has already mentioned on the thread to email him the info when finished for his approval.

What you're doing sounds like a great idea. Please let me know what you come up with. I'll do what I can to make a static link or links to help those who'd like to make use of your discoveries.
