I've recently bought a 71 Deluxe Reverb. After initial enthusiasm, I've become less satisfied with the harp tone.
I had to replace the speaker anyway so I put in two 10" Webers and that made it more harp friendly right off the bat.
Next, I'm going to step by step make some reversible changes, ie the tubes.
First off, a 12AY7 to replace the 12AX7 in the driver.
I've seen both 6V6s and 6L6s suggested for the power tubes. Someone has put 6L6s in this one. For harp should I go back to 6V6s?
Also I've seen recs to change the rectifier to 5U4. Should I do this or leave the 5AR4?
I'm finding conflicting info around the net from various experts.

I would stick with the original spec power tubes. I would also recommend saving changing out the 1st preamp tube for last. START by lowering the gain of the phase inverter - I use 12AU7's in both the inverter and middle positions, and a 12AX7 at the preamp spot. I like this better than they other way around.
As for the rectifier: 5AR4 = about 20V over a 5U4. The 5U4 has more sag a little spongier - which will give you more expression room for harp. Note that if you change the power tubes OR rectifier you MUST check and adjust the bias current. ---------- /Greg

I would put 6v6's back in it. Set the bias as best you can and sell it. It will never give you a thick sweet sound. Those amps were made to sound clean!!!! If you crank it it distort, but a upper midrange razzerr blade to the type of distort. Try to sell it to guitar player!

yeah, That's kinda what I was finding out, it's got to get really loud to break up and at that volume a 6 blow will pierce your eardrums!
I might have better luck with my Blues Junior but the feedback is ridiculous! I might should sell it too and just admit that I have to have two amps, one for guitar and one for harp.
Actually, my Peavey Classic 410 is good for both harp (despite what most people will tell you)and guitar but I was looking for something smaller. The Peavey weighs just under 300 lbs!
