I'm just a couple months into this harmonica thing. I started with a Promaster, and added a Bluesmaster recently. I was having considerable trouble hitting 7-8-9 draw on the Promaster, but not so much on the Bluesmaster - so I was convinced the reeds needed work. (I recognize some of this is just me too, but the better play on the Bluesmaster made me keep looking).

I cleaned it up, tweaked the reeds with toothpick, Lee Oskar tool/method and a couple other ways, checked the clearance on the sides, but still couldn't seem to get it. Then I read about a different approach here: http://harmonicasessions.com/apr04/h-workbench.html. I gave it a try and it seems to work extremely well.

What do you guys think about the reed-curling approach? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else. It sure seemed to help me with the gapping, when other approaches didn't work for me. I realize I'm awfully new to this, and I might have just gotten lucky, but still curious what others think.

I like mine fairly straight, with a very, very slight scoop on the tip. I'm no professional customizer, but I've experimented with several different degrees of curling and like that the best. Swing by Gardner sometime and we'll talk shop! I won't be there this Saturday though. Going out of town.

Kenya Pollard (the guy who wrote that article) also has another workbench were he straightens his reeds. Interestingly, neither article mentions the other setup, so you can't tell what his preference is.

Interesting - I hadn't come across the other article.

Yeah - I'd like to talk. We're pretty close. I may also try to make the Ricci show, though it's a bit of a late start for me.
