Following on from a post I did on the howling Wolf thread.
My pet hate as a jazz man is coming across modern day s... blues rhythm sections.
No harp on this a'm afraid but a superbly simplistic HIP Rhythm section. A lesson in groove for everyone involved in blues music of today.
Big mama, Buddy Guy.

The 3 best drummers I've ever worked with over the years have all been extensively trained in jazz drumming. I find they listen more, reacting to and driving the dynamics in equal measure - not just boom boom tish, boom boom tish all the way through. Lighter touch too. Wish there were more good ones out there...

Mrverylongusername: I agree if they have developed down that road it just seems like melting butter for jazz drummer to switch playing blues.
Heres a thing try and get a blues rock or rock style drummer to play any form of swing. They fail every time, always sounds like wading in mud through a swamp. Timing Sits completly wrong and drives a band mad.
Bass players that can be very different depending on their listening, knowledge on blues grooves.Very often like alot of front line jazz players they by pass some ingredients on their route.

just one more ! If the drummer turns up wearing a vest, wristbands etc , he's not there to play he's there for a drum workout, whether anyones with him or not!

I thought Sam Lay on Paul Butterfields first album was good example of how its done. Its to bad his original band didn't stay together longer!
