Hey everyone,

I came upon this site when I was just browsing youtube and stumbled on to one of Adam's videos. Anyways just watching him play and the music that came outta his harp made me think about getting into the world of playing a harmonica. Abit about myself, I'm 21 male in Ontario, Canada. I've been interested in the blues harp for the last month at least and have been making the steps to learn how to play. I would love to eventually be able to play up to the skill of the people I've watched on youtube and with some years of practice I'm sure I will.

Anywho I went down to the local music shop and I purchased a Hohner Big River Harp in C and a beginners booklet to go along with it as well. I love the harp so far and have been just trying to get my single notes down pat heh. My only real musical background comes from highschool when I played the french horn/trombone into I graduated but I never kept up with it since then.

Well thats alittle about me and I hope to be active in these forums while I learn this great little instrument.

CH: Welcome to this forum.
Hey man, stick with it, run your own race, believe in yourself and you will go far.
My best tip not that you asked for one but anyway is make sure you enjoy the journey.

Its better to keep traveling than arrive in just about everything.
Regards

Too bad your name wasn't CanadianHarpist -- that'd start a fad.

Welcome aboard! I'm from Ontario, too. Although, I'm not there right now. Where in are you?

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Oda: I'm just outside of Thunder Bay.

I'm enjoying learning how to play so far, I can play a mean "Marry has a little lamb" and "Marines Hym" heh. I think I have the basics on trying to hit a single note almost down pat. Just getting used to holding the harp and how many hours you can get lost into just trying to learn the darn thing.

Jawbone, I'm not in Canada right now -- but I live in Ottawa. When I get back I'll probably move to Niagra Region (St. Kitts)

I hear the GO train has set up a few routes through-out Ontario for the summer (and possibly beyond) and cheap prices too -- I'd be down with some sort of "Ontario MBH" get together!

Hey CanadianHarp welcome aboard. There is a ton of good things going on here.
Being in the heart of the Golden Horsehoe, I'm up for a good Ontario MBH Jam. I'm in and might even be able to conjur up the backup band too. If we can put it together that'd be cool but...FYI... we're gig'd out until mid August now but anytime after that'd be great.

Eh fellows Canadian harpers, (harper, sounds like someone we know up here....)I'm in Peterborough myself, former guitar player converted to harmonica due to wrist injury. Jawbone, I will try to get to one of these gigs in the Barrie area, not too far from here.

Yeah Manitoba is quite the run from Thunder Bay. Even though it's only been acouple of weeks I've been enjoying my time with my harp. I have a few basic (and I mean basic) songs down nothing special but I'm just trying to learn all that I can right now. Currently working on "Fan/Rocking Vibrato" and trying to get it to sound right. Seems like everyone has a different opinion on how to play the harp and what to do for certain techniques...just gotta find what works for you I guess. Maybe I'll buy Adam's beginner package and use the experts wisdom himself to try and teach me heh

Hey CH - I wish I had started when I was 21!!! One thing I might say is, you might want to try the Hohner Special 20 (that's just my opinion) You will probably find the recessed reed plates more comfortable and the Big River takes more air and may get you into the bad habit of playing too hard. I think learning to bend is also easier on the special 20. I'm not sure what all they have at your music store. I know one thing - you're in for an amazing journey with this crazy little instrument!!!

CanadianHarp,
I have been at it for 2 months now, lots of work but for music it's all worth it! I have purchased Adam's following lessons: Beginner's Special, Play Along Sessions, Tone Clinic, Bending The 4 Draw, Blues Scale, Turnarounds, the song Easy and the Acoustic Jam Tracks. Plus all the youtube videos...man, that`s a lot of material.... all you need is there. What I like about it is it gives you all the basic ingredients (i am a baker\pastry man by trade)to start building your own style. No regrets here.

didn't know you guy were waiting for me lol -- had a lot of work and MBH was distracting me.

Hmm... we'd have to plan this out. The problem I forsee is a place for us to meet -- because not all of us live in the same city, so no doubt there'll be people commuting -- where would they stay?

if you guys like maybe anyone interesting in an MBH get together can meet up at a certain time on skype for a group chat and we can discuss the options and the reality of it.

my skype: odalanizi
my email: odalanizi(at)gmail.com

keep in touch folks! I hope this materializes :)

What the H-ll is Skype?? Is that something that happens after you twitter??? Not up to speed on all these things.

so far we have Peterborough (Chris A),
Niagara (Oda's future),
Hamilton (me)
KW (Mr so&so),
Barrie (jawbone),
London (Scoltx),
CanadianHarp (Thunder Bay),
MindApe...Where you at?
And anyone who has yet to jump in, speak up.
and of course if any of our friends from south of the border wanted to make a trip we could work it out.

There's quite a few from NY, PA, Ohio and Michigan that may want to use a bit of fuel.

Looking at the mix we'd be best to make it a central location. Perhaps the 401 corridor between Oakville and TO might be something to think about?

You can usualy find a bar that'll open up a private room for something like this if we're gonna fund it for them with drinks and food.

If you all want I'll shoot around a few places and see what bubbles up. I'd be gunning for sometime in August if that's Ok with all of you.
CanadianHarp, that's kinda' far for you to travel but perhaps you can work something out. Seeing as you started this thread, you just gotta find a way....

Oda, got a date for your return to our home and native land yet? We want to make sure that you're included here.

haha... thanks for the laugh Xharp...
"is that something you do after you twitter"

Skype is a chat/voice/video client.

It's unfortunate that no two people live in the same city!

-- I'll be back in July (in time for the Ottawa blues fest!)
-- I believe MindApe is from Ottawa (he posted that in another thread)

I think the FIRST step is to get EVERYONE interested to express their interest in this thread so we can account for how many people there'll be.

Unlike Sarah Palin, I actually could, when I was a kid, look out my window and see another country. I used to live just across the river from Canada with a river front view when I lived in Maine. I'm in Upstate NY now, but my car is older than CanadianHarp is. :(

I know most of Oh Canada on the harp. I'm practicing in case Jeb Bush runs in 2112 and NY decides to cecede and join Canada.

When I lived in Maine we had a fly in the house. I was about three at the time and for some reason I had a big stick in the house. The fly landed on the big picture window in the living room...

Lesson:
Black fly season is not a good time to break a picture window in Maine.
