Recently a Central European harp player named Botond Kiss emailed me to let me know that he had developed a harp tab editor based on my tabbing system. He offered it to me for free. I get lots of offers of various sorts; few of them are as interesting--brilliant, really--as this one. I don't have the time or energy at this point to follow up on his offer, but I did tell him that I would share the fruits of his labors with this community.

His harp tab editor is still in beta form. In fact, he hoped that I might help him perfect it. An exhausting thought for Professor Gussow! I wish I were 20 years younger and didn't have a 3-year-old son. But I recognize true ingenuity when I'm confronted with it, and Mr. Kiss is onto something.

Anyway, here's a link to the tabbing website that he's set up. Please check it out.

[EDITED TO ADD: A board member has written to me in alarm, afraid that I'm declaring my dislike of fatherhood in the paragraph above! I should have made my point clearer by writing, "I wish I were 20 years younger and didn't have a 3-year-old son, a full-time job, a running addiction, a lovely wife who deserves my compassionate attention, and any of the other pursuits that occupy my time." I was trying to say, "I wish I had the time and energy that such an interesting idea deserves." It's always dangerous, I've learned, to deploy irony, even the most glancing sort, in mixed company.]

I checked it out briefly--didn't seem to have any overblows on it--but that's OK with me--I can't OB anyway ;-) . . .

Does look very interesting. It would be good if could lay out the tab in some sort of portable format that could be easily seen on the web (HTML) and saved as some sort of standard text format. It may do that, but I'm not sure from my quick look. It would be nice to be able to share Adam-tab on this forum, for example.

I just had a quick tinker with it, so this may not be a fair comment.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem like a very universal way of sharing tab. What I mean is that you have to have the application to use the method.

I use that system that's on Mike Will's site, which is linked to on the FAQs page of this site. I'll put it here for convenience:

http://www.angelfire.com/tx/myquill/

What I like about that system is that you can write it in Notepad, e-mail it, fileshare it, what have you.

As for timing, a while ago, I put a system up on this forum that went down like a lead brick: it was just too hard to read.

Now, I use something similar to Adams, eg:

12/8

1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a |

or:

4/4

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & |

or, if you need to switch to/from shuffle/straight-time:

12/8

1 & a 2 & a 3 & 4 & |

16th notes, I'd write like this:

4/4

1 a & a 2 a & a 3 a & a 4 a & a |

I works for blues but, could get a bit tricky with complex jazz rhythms.

I think that when I posted that other system mrso&so said a similar thing about the usefulness of being able to use standard text.

I've got to go out now, but I'll put something up tomorrow - that is if my hair of the dog works. Heavy night last night.

Anyway Adam, thanks for pointing it out.
