Hi everyone. I know most of you guys/gals in this forum are interested in blues harp. Well me too; but these last couple of months I've been trying some new genres with the diatonic (using overblows), mainly jazz and klezmer, wich are styles that I'm very fond of. Jazz still seems a bit difficult without proper studying of all the theory behind the improvisation, so it's not a reachable goal yet, but klezmer seems a lot more doable, since improvisation there it's less of a subject. Well, here's my first klezmer harmonica video
Hope you like it and tell my how do you like the style on the diatonic I'm playing a Special 20 in C by the way.
If you want to hear a marvelous blend of klezmer, blues, harmonica and ...well it is just impossible to really name their style - be sure to listen to Hazmat Modine out of New York. Wade Schuman is a great harp player. The band has TWO harp players, a tuba, ..... ok I'll leave it to you to see the rest.
Great pick Greg,Hazmat Modine Bahamut has been on high rotation in my workshop for the last year. Deep and twisted lyrics, brooding rhythms and cross ventured harp stylen. Not to mention Wades crisp but butter like tone.
Thanks guys, actually I was aware of all of them, been Jason Rosenblatt with his Shtreiml band my favorite among them. But of course all of them are a great inspiration to start playing and listening klezmer tunes with ot without harp. I have Sandy Weltman records too, and his Klezmer Nuthouse it´s a great album. Haven´t hear Levy doing this kind of music, though he does a lot of oriental music.
Great to know that more of you dig into this kind of music too!
PD: the song it's actually in Cm for those who were wondering.
Wanted to resuscitate this thread to thank Greg Heumann for turning me on to Hazmat Modine. I bought Bahamat and have been listening obsessively since. Blows me away! I love how this forum exposes me to new music and ideas all the time, this is just the latest and greatest example.
Thanks Zack, if that's directed at me, but given your youth and inexperience, when you are a little older and wiser (maybe 20 years, maybe tomorrow morning) you will look back at that post and be embarrassed by your callow judgment!!
I'm sure Zack was speaking of Metalsaurio who I agree is pretty good and BTW if you're wondering, you're not too bad either.
Why should Zack's opinion carry less weight because he's a punk and lives with his mama? For all we know this is his 187,932,893,239 reincarnation on earth and you're just on your 2nd.
Chris M--hate to boast, but I crossed over to the other shore on my first go 'round...came back for seconds just for laughs--and to learn to play the harp!!! Lol
GH--great video, the look on that child's face was pure rapture! I'm definitely on the klezmer bandwagon, long time fan of the Klezmatics.
Yup Buddha, I like it a lot ! I didn't know it was klezmer at all, on the "Uncle Jason" version I was gonna say "hey ! That's more a swing tune, from a 40's girl band like the Pointer Sisters or something". But you really put an oriental feel in your version, really good !
Has Jason got a CD playing that kind of stuff? It is close to the coolest harmonica I've ever heard.
"Its Jason Ricci before his skateboarding accident and all that drain bamage that causes him to be a Rocker." It's a pitty. The klezmer soul was strong in this one...
I'm sorry guys, I thought it would be obvious. We all know Adam likes to have a bit of the drink before he plays blues but when he does the klezmer he likes to play completely sober. Its Adam.
Zack, that's a good idea, for every one who has listened to that track please pay pal me $90 and if you act now, I'll throw in a free harp for being honest.
