He's an amazing slide player. Sometimes I think Jason Ricci is a bit like Derek Trucks on the harp. Funky, challenging and soulful but still well rooted in blues.

Yes! Derek Trucks is great. I have seen him perform live both with the Allman Brothers and The Derek Trucks Band. Derek's band are really eclectic musicians and their music tastes are all over the map. They may play a rock or blues number then play a jazz number then follow that with an exotic Asian Indian jam. They must drive the marketing powers that be nuts because thay are hard to categorize and the record executives like to put music in neat categories. The Derek Trucks Band do a fantastic version of Afro Blue with a flute and slide guitar that I like even better than the late John Coltrane's version and I'm a big Coltrane fan.

Harmonicanick: I would answer your question very simply.
That band don't need one.

aside from not needing one there might be two or three harp players in the world that could add something to that band and its likely the band is unaware of them.

Buddha: Yes very true and that could be the case.
I've heard that band a few times it's a interesting band. I think in my reply to harmonica nick I am kind of thinking as a band leader kind of thing and the present climate.
When you put another cat on wages usually you bring in a side man that dosen't change their sound that much just colours it. I know when Iv'e been used as a side man they give you small solo spot, or spots and like to keep you in a straight jacket must of the time on set stuff. They are the one that has to shine.
This is just my opinion but that band I guess would bring in a saxophone player, tnr, and sop, that say doubles on flute, do some harp and cover keys or rhythm guitar if neccessary. They use him or her in this way, the most cost effective and won't disturb anything they have developed.
It helps colour the band and thats it they can get rid of you easily when they want.
If there is a B3 man in the band then again out and out harp playing hmm, they would really have to change everything they do to make it worthwhile, so it's no longer that band particularly with that style of drumming. I think also in the present climate promotion is on a very tight budget.
But Yes your right Buddha I think if an out and out harp player was going into that band maybe there is only you and a couple of others capable of doing it for sure.

I caught the Derek Trucks Band in the UK at the Manchester Academy on the last tour. Great stuff!
