yes another thread on amps an mics. but no questions just more of a rant.
i was at my friends studio last night an i played through a bunch of differnt stuff. first off i tried his sm57. did not like it at all. i think i might have been useing the wrong cable for it cause it didnt make any sound when ran through my anti feedback pedal, only when straight into the amp. an even then i had to crank the volume way up. but i dont even like how small it felt in my hand. i like the bullet better. so i also play through my valve jr combo. a bass amp that was a pevey amp and a crate cabinet. and a marshal halfstack. once with the marshal head an once with a valve jr head. so for my review the marshal with the valve jr amp sounded horrible. the marshal halfstack sounded ok but way too much treble/high end. i think if i used an eq pedal it would sound better. the bass amp sounded awsome. had to mess with the settings an the eq to get the right sound but once i did it sounded great. it had alot of tone to it. i played through that for awhile. then when i switched back to my valve jr combo i noticed it had ALOT more crunch to it but it didnt have as much low end. of course cause its not a bass amp. all in all the bass amp was alot of fun to play through but my valve jr combo realy gave me the sound i wanted. i think if i do a few mods to it or maybe run an eq pedal it would sound perfect. now i know i wasnt playing through recomended harp amps but this is just a comparison. oh an also i tried his MXR CARBON COPY delay pedal. i must say i want one. dosnt take away any tone when turned on, you can get many sounds out of it, an it sounds great.

I love my Valve JR. combo. I've never gotten the chance to play through alot of amps, so I'm by no means any authority on gear. I'm glad to see you made some comparisons and the valve jr. holds up. Makes me feel even better about my purchase. Myself, I like the feel of a SM57. I think the large bullet I have is uncomfortable. I would like to try a SM58 with a slightly larger head on it, and possibly a smaller bullet mic. I think I may like something in between.

Unless he has one of my Ultimate 57's, which can be set up for high impedance, that SM57 is a low impedance mic. From what you describe, I'll bet dimes to doughnuts he was using a "cheater cable" - XLR at one end, 1/4" at the other. No impedance matching transformer. Am I right? This is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. You're getting less than 1/2 of the mic's output that way. Can't judge a piece of equipment when its owner doesn't know how to set it up in the first place.

yes that is what he was useing. i had a feeling that was it. cause i remember reading something on your website about that. so if i got one of yours set up for high impedance what kind of set-up would i need? or could i just use the "cheater cable"?

A cheater cable is for a HIGH impedance mic with an XLR connector, like a BluesBlaster or late model JT30. If I set up a high-Z Ultimate mic, first I'll try to talk you out of using an XLR cable altogether, because it causes precisely this kind of confusion. I set all my personal High-Z stuff with screw-on, and my low-Z stuff with XLR to keep it simple. But yes I can set up a High-Z Ultimate 58, for example, as high-Z with an XLR connector to work with your cable. I would need to know whether your cable is wired "Pin 2 hot" or "pin 3 hot". You might not know that. See why it is just easier to set your high-Z gear up with screw-on connectors? ---------- /Greg

A Shure SM57 with an impedance converter or a Shure 545 set for high impedance, is a hard mic to beat.
My personal preference is the 545. But either of those mics is a killer. The list of players who have used either of them is endless.
The Epiphone Valve Jr is not a bad amp either. It's not in the same league as a HarpGear HG2 or a Fender 5F1 Champ. But it is a great low budget amp.
