i think im gonna get one in a month or so. question is which one would you buy? the description sounds like the HG2 has more low end. if that true id like that. any insights about the difference in sound on these amps would be helpful.

I have a fender portable PA (passport 150 watt) so i can mic it myself if i needed so i don't think vol is a factor. (might not be a bad idea anyway 3 speakers spread out would sound huge lol )

oh and what about the double trouble. this seems like the in between and i hear little about it

I have a HarpGear Double Trouble. It's the best amp I have ever used! I play through mine with two very loud guitarists, a piano, Bass and drums, I have never needed to line out or mic it up to be heard yet!

John Nemeth uses one a lot and loves it. His new album "Love Me Tonight" was all recorded using one.Check out the Youtube videos of John using one at The Knitting Factory. The HarpGear Double Trouble is the two-tone amp directly behind him.

I looked hard at many amps and settled on the HG-35 because I felt it would best meet my needs. At first I thought I would be playing mostly home jams with my friends and bought a Roland micro-cube. It seemed plenty loud in the store. It couldn't keep up with 2 guitars, bass and drums unless I put it through the PA though. It is still a good practice & mini-jam amp and my kids will use it so no harm done.

I knew I wanted an amp I could run at 3/4 volume so I would get a satisfying tube tone. I thought HG-2 at that point. I talked to Brian Purdy at HarpGear and we figured out HG-25 would fit my needs best. I've used the HG-35 at full gigs and it takes everything it has to keep up with a full band+PA, but it sounds great when near-maxed out.

Call Brian and tell him where you want to play.

i think im leaning HG2. the small size is appealing. i used to play guitar with half stacks and large combo's and it was a pain to take them anywhere.

again im not worried about vol cause i think mic'ing is key anyway no matter how big the amp.... your just gonna sound "bigger" mic'ed.

the main thing i am/was curious is to tonal difference in the amps

On the HarpGear site Brian has plenty of audio /visual examples of the amps to give you an idea. Also there are loads of clips on YouTube.
Whichever HarpGear amp you choose, you will have an outstanding harp amp.

The Double Trouble is not really any wider than the HG2 just taller, so therefore the space it takes up on stage is pretty much the same.

I agree with the previous post (dfwdlg) that the best option is to call Brian and see what he says. He is a great guy to deal with and will point you in the right direction.
