have to replace a reed plate for a D harmonica.
got the choice between 2 kind of replacement plates: either with 'longer thinner' reeds or 'wider shorter' ones.

there is said to be a sound quality difference between the two. ('shorter' ones = 'dirtier' sound)
there also might be a big difference in the workability of the reeds when shaping them that i am not aware off.
now before i go for the 'dirtier' sound i'd like to know what your experience or opinion is.

please let me know what you think.

Don't know what the answer is to your question, but would like to know what type of harp it is because I wasn't aware that long or short reed types were available on replacement plates.

It's a Seydel Favorite.

I have measured the reeds in a Lee Oskar and compared them to the length of Marine Band reeds. (I think this is right--it has been a long time since I did it). The Marine Band reeds were longer by about a 16th of an inch.

Since I prefer the sound of the Marine Band, I think I'd go with the long reeds. Just an opinion based on my opinion, of course.

The Favorite (after a wood comb transplant) was my No. 1 harp before I started messing with the Solists, which also has that narrow reed thing going on. My preference is narrow.

My preference is the alu comb! ;)

But honestly (must be because of my butter fingers) after squashing a couple of the original lids on some hard tile floor i found out that the 1847 lids fit this harp as well! Since then I replaced all the lids and really liked what i got!

Anyway, today i don't seem to find that option for either wide or narrow reeds anymore on the Seydel site...Guess it took me too long to decide. :(
