I'm not really sure what style it would come under. But really there are only two styles of music. Good and bad! But if I had to categorise it. I would class it as modern country / bluegrass.
It's a great style and a very emotive form of music. I could happily listen to a full CD of stuff by those two guys.
Thats great stuff! Not bad at all for a couple 16 year old Australian lads.
I like the look of the stomp boxes also from ellis guitars. They are hand made from a range of different timbers so they look good as well as sound good.
Which shows you how to make a very simple one using a speaker as a mic. Looks pretty straightforward. I've also seen lots of professionally made ones but they are a little pricey for me. I'm hoping to do some busking with a guitar playing friend and I thought a stomp box might be a good idea as I tap my foot all the time while playing and I might as well put it to good use. I've also read that some people have just made a box and stuck a mic in it with various success. I'll let you know how I get on.
Hey Oisin! This was in a thread from a couple of weeks ago. Another member, JayMcc28, posted that link and a number of members said they were going to build it. Did Jay or anybody else, if so did you have any success?
I wanted to build it myself but haven't been able to find a speaker cone. I did some more research and found an idea to use a piezo buzzer. I bought one at Radioshack for about $3 and a 1/4" jack for another buck or so,soldered them together and mounted it inside a cigar box...now I am the first to admit that I am not a guy with fine motor skills, and usually I just listen with admiration and woodshop envy as the large contingent of do it yourselfers on this forum describe or post instructional video of their latest projects...so I guess I was inspired to give it a shot...I'm declaring it a success, because: (1) when I soldered the parts together I didn't burn the house down (first time I soldered anything!), and (2) when I plug it into an amp and stomp I get a definite percussive effect. Now it's not a rich low bass--it is after all a small box, but it works. I also threw some jangly chimes into the cigar box and it sounds kind of funky. I'm sure others on this forum could do a lot more with it than I have so far, but I'm happy with my start.
I'm glad you posted this because I had meant to follow up and ask people if they had built the tomdukich version. Would love to hear other experiences and tips.
@HH: I haven't had the time or materials to try it yet but I'm slowly collecting them. I think I have everything I need for materials but now I need to find the time. Soccer season just ended so I'm hoping to get at it in the next couple weeks. I'll keep you posted.
I've got my materials all together to build one--hope to do it before the week-end is over, cuz I'd like to start using it at the Farmer's markets I'm scheduled to play. I'll post some notes if I get one working--
BTW--keep an eye out on Garage Sales to get the speakers--I picked up two cabs with woofers, mid range and tweeters in each one--two dollars for the both of them. . .
