Hey guys, I just posted a suggestion over at Discovery.com for their show, "Time Warp". Basically the show is all about using high speed photography to slow down things that happen to fast for the eyes to see. I've seen diagrams showing what's going on inside a harp during different parts of playing, but with a see-through comb and covers some high speed video pictures of blows, draws, draw bends, blow bends, overblows, overdraws, tongue blocks, etc. could be pretty cool and probably pretty instructive too. Maybe they could even capture what happens when a reed blows out. Here's a link to where I suggested it.

If you all think it might be interesting drop them a line and let them know (and maybe suggest to them someone good who'd be willing to be their lab rat.)

The more people who drop the line the better chance they'll do it. XHarp, thanks for dropping them a line.

A very good idea. However, I think it is too difficult and it wouldn't yield good results.

You would need a comb that is perfectly clear. And if you go that far, it would probably be easier to build a experimentation harp from scratch.

The problem is: they want stuff to film that gives a nice intuitive insight into the process itself. A vibrating reed isn't really the most exciting stuff.

Some of the information you are looking for already exists: I.e. this guy photogrphed/filmed the reeds with a stroboskope - link (click the pictures).
And here he simulates the vibration of the reeds - link.

The thing that happens when a reed blows out can't really be observed from the outside: When a reed vibrates there's the elastic properties that are at work. If the reed is strained too much the plastic properties kick in, which changes the internal properties. Thats also the reason you can't really retune a blown out reed. It hasn't got the elastic properties anymore...

One thing that I would be very interested in, is the air flow when playing bends, ob, etc...

Back to the discovery thing: I hate to be the pessimist, but I don't think we have fighting chance. Otherwise I would have subscribed and posted something in a blink of a second.
