I will be traveling to San Diego July 10-17th. I know that there are a few on the MBH forum who are from around there. Please fill me on on the Blues Scene there. I know that Rod Piazza will be at Anthology Friday night. Has anyone seen his act?

Yea I'm about an hour and a half away from SD on a good traffic day so I don't know much about their blues scene, but I have seen Rod Piazza live and I'd totally recommend his act- he's pretty amazing live. ---------- "Without music, life would be a mistake" -Nietzsche

I've only passed through San Diego once, but had a couple of great nights at the Belly up Tavern at Solana Beach. It has (or had) a blues and roots music focus - so also swing, funk, reggae, rockabilly etc.

scstrickland....Steely Dan is the REAL DEAL. Not sure if we will see Rod. I'm trying to justify the price of admission. Tickets $18 and a minimum of $15 meal. I understand that he plays West Coast Swing and Chicago Blues. He uses "two" Harpkings and is loud. ---------- They've got a name for the winners in the world. I...I want a name when I lose. In my opinion Rod is a must see for blues fans.
His band are incredibly tight and Honey on the piano is simply amazing!
He is loud but not in a bad "wall of noise" way. He uses it as a tool. The band go from full volume to "hear a pin drop" quiet in the blink of an eye. They are simply superb.
Henry Carjaval is the guitarist and he's a great guy, he's always really happy to chat to folk.
Get yourself down there you won't regret it!

Thanks Kingley for the insightful input. Would hate to miss the opportunity to see a world class harp player. ---------- They've got a name for the winners in the world. I...I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama The Crimson Tide. Call me Deacon Blue.

$33 to see Piazza and get fed? Sheesh! in rip-off UK that wouldn't get you through the door at most 'name act' gigs.
You guys are so lucky!
Edit - OK I corrected the amount. My maths sucks!

Yeah that's true! When I went to see Piazza at Burnley Blues festival it was about £35GBP approx $56USD just to get in. Food and drink were extra.

Spent 7 glorious days in San Diego about a month ago at the AWWA conference. The Blues scene was sketchy,(there are a few bars and you can find them on the www), so we just enjoyed the gaslamp area night life and fine restaurants. The waterfont area near the convention centre is a fantastic area and apart from my 1/2 hour morning harp practice on the park bench there (lmao) the best entertainment there was a sax player in the square playing to backing tracks and a few bands playing in the square on the Sunday. Its a great city with excellent diversity. If you get a chance get on one of the bicycle rickshaws and enjoy the ride downtown. And get over to Coronado Island and get to the Del Coronado resort there for dinner. It's one of the oldest wood framed hotel structures in America. Its got a great history and damn fine food.
Most of all, have fun. ---------- "Keep it in your mouth" - XHarp

XHarp...I can't wait to go back to Sunny California. This will be my third trip in four years to San Diego. I'm going to the ESRI International Users Conference. There will be about 18,000 from all over the world to show up at the conference. My favorite place to hang out is La Jolla Beach. The Star of India and the HMS Surprise are worth the time to view. The whole thing at the marine museum cost us $14 to get in but it was well worth it. ---------- "Keep it in your mouth" - XHarp

I sent this thread to a guitar player I was in a band with way back who has since moved to San Diego. He offered the following. --------------------------------------------------
This web site is good resource http://blusd.org/ Rod Piaza kicks ass. he's based in LA. Michelle Lundeen has a good harp player. DA and the Hitmen are my favorite. I've jammed with the harp guy. He bought a 15 watt Crate tube amp from my brother. Anthology is a good venue. I haven't been there yet but heard good things. Lots of jazz shows. The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach is my favorite venue. Lots a variety. Best sound in town. Patricks in the Gaslamp Quater downtown has best local blues acts 7 nights a week. Up in LA there a bunch of good harp players including James Harmon and Kim Wilson.

Talking about Rod Piazza. The first time I saw them was in 1985. I was night skiing up at Snow Summit in Big Bear, California and was taking a break when I heard what I thought was some blues harp. Of course it was the last thing I expected to hear on a skiing trip. I clattered my way up to the upper level of the lodge and walked (clumped) into the start of the Flyers first set. That was it for the skiing for me. I had never heard of Rod Piazza before, but of course I became an instant fan. In those days they had Jr. Watson on guitar. I've probably seen them at least 25 times since then since they ARE local. If you get a chance, go see'em. You won't be disapointed.

Thanks bluzlvr. We'll see if we're not too jet lagged. We fly out of Mississippi Friday morning. Looking forward to that low humidity. ---------- They've got a name for the winners in the world. I...I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama The Crimson Tide. Call me Deacon Blue.

Make sure you put down the harp long enough to see the beaches in San Diego. I haven't been out there in a few years. My Dad lives out there. Coronado is gorgeous. I was the fattest boogie boarder on the beach but I had a lot of fun. I don't know what the blues scene is like. You might want to check out some of the Mexican music, it's not blues, but sometimes you got to love an area for it's specialties.

La Jolla is great, so is Old Town. The last time I was out I was having problems with heel spurs so the beach was a good way to get off my feet. I also liked the fish tacos. They are nearly impossible to find in upstate NY. (I guess Long John Silvers has them now, but that's not exactly gourmet.) Have fun in the sun.
