I have been trying to learn Wolf's opening lick to this great song but just can not get it! It sounds like he is playing around honking on the 4 draw with perhaps a chord in there somewhere, uggggg.
Does anyone happen to know it? I have the song on 'Howlin Wolf - more real folk blues', it doesn't seem to be on youtube else I would link it.
If anyone is familiar with this song I'd love to hear from them!
Thanks.

No clues about the lick though.

Do you mean the first 12-bars?
the first part of the riff sounds like (on a C harp) 3'd 2d 2"d 1d 2"d 2d 2d
The first two and second bunch of three notes are slurred together. There's probably a lot more going on though that sounds ok to my ears
The second part phrase add a 3d - 3b - 3d - 3b 2d 2d motiff to the basic riff, giving a less bluesy sound with the major third. There seems to be a little of the 4 hole with those chugs on the 3b and 3d.
On the change to the IV/C-chord, the harp follows the guitar, with the riff reminiscent of "rolling and tumbling" 1d 2d 3d' 2d 2d and a roll off to the 1d
That's pretty much it, plus some wailing on the 4d when it goes to the V (D-chord)
That rolling and tumbling riff is a great one, and easily embellished, say 1d 2d 3d' 2d 2d" 1d 2d" 2d 2d which kindof mimics the "cried the whole night long" vocal line
hope that I've understood what you're after, cheers

Hey,
Many thanks tooka for link, and GH for having a crack at it! I will take some time to go through what you have written and see if I can get it. Not much closer on first attempt but you certainly made more sense of it than I could...
Cheers,
Oliver.

Oliver - no worries, hope it's some help.
I think the key to getting this riff is the "blue third" 3 draw bend. The again I think it's the key to all blues playing.
I'd be happy to write out the full twelve bars in long hand if what I've written above makes no sense.
