I use a Shure 55SH. The look is great and goes with my acoustic blues style, my problem is not being heard without smothering the thing and losing hand techniques which I enjoy using.
My thought is that the mic is fine but the sound man can't get me right, others say "just get a 58 and forget about look."
I like to play but I like styling too.
Any thoughts?

Adjust your priorities....

Sound first, looks second. Get a proper mic and buy a nice fedora.

The 55sh is better for beating off groupies, though. ;-)

Honestly? sorry but I'm going to be blunt... .

If your soundman can't cope with a straightforward mic like this then he needs to grow better ears and learn how to eq properly. Make no mistake the 55 is a proper mic - as good as a 58.

I use one for vocals. It's pokey and resists feedback well, it just is a little mid-heavy. Nothing a bit of EQ and compression can't fix.

That's what I thought...harp gets a quick check.
When a harpman does my sound the crowd loves me ( they're drinking heavily but it's cool by me)

thanks

I've got a 55SH too that I use for vocals. I love the look. It has the same guts as the SM58. I also play semi-acoustic into this mic for some songs. You DO need to know where the sweet spot is and you can still project (and use hand effects) into this mic fine. But again, don't get off to the side or anywhere but aiming right dead center or you will lose volume. That's my experience anyway. Honestly, I'm thinking about getting a Beta58 soon.
