jbone says he's playing with his band at the Blueberry Cafe (??) during the Sunflower River Gospel and Blues Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi on August 7-8th. That's only 60 miles from my front door--the festival, I mean--and I've enjoyed going in the past.
Let's start an email list for members of the forum who are making the trek. Deak, are you heading down this year?
I'm working out almost daily on my Farmer Foot Drum set-up and may just decide to play the streets of Clarksdale solo, although it would be much easier with a guitar man.
If you'll be there, please let me know. And please make that known here. At the very least, we should be able to find a venue in which to congregate--most likely jbone's gig--and hoist a beer or three.
adam, i would love to run into you there! the saturday afternoon, i think we'll be doing an open mic thing, so any and all would be welcome on stage. both amps will be in attendance, the silvertone1482 and the sligo bassman, along with the recently-modded e-v mic that greg did such a great job on.
anyone who is at loose ends that weekend, we'd way dig seeing you walk in and at least say hi if not take a chair with us on stage.
according to deak's myspace, he's going to be other places that weekend adam. but last time we were there- for the caravan in may- deak sat in with Delta Highway and it was a truly excellent show. they even had me up for a minute at the end of the night! both deak and brandon, d-h's front man, were running bassmans and bullets and the sound was so huge. it didn't hurt a bit that the band was so tight and tuned in.
clarksdale is sort of becoming our second home. we always look forward to getting a weekend there and it's always an adventure who we're going to meet.
That's exactly right. The airport is easy to use, easy access, easy hop to the rental car agencies. 240 E. to 61 South. Actually, there are some cheap hotels in Clarksdale. About 80 miles from Memphis south to C'dale, I believe. Very direct trip.
well we began calling a week ago and every one we talked to was pretty well booked. we did luck out and got the last room at riverside hotel- an adventure in itself. if you ever get the chance, call "rat" and book a room, then come down and hang with him, get the tour of the place, and listen to a true lifetime resident tell his stories. he met them all.
see jay, now that's one reason i am a lucky dog- wife as music partner, possibility of breaking even for a trip to a fest a few hours away, no worries about who's flirting with who, etc etc.
sorry circumstances forgo your making it this time. but let me recommend now, plan fopr the juke joint fest, which is the real big one in clarksdale in april every year. and it's maybe after tax return time too!
Hey Adam, this is Audie (Bill Perry's drummer). I live in Clarksdale, so I'm going to be around for the whole festival. I'm going to be playing with Bill on the main stage on the 7th, and then my own band is going to be playing for tips at Ground Zero from 3-5 on the 8th. I'd love to have you sit in on the 8th if you want to, and I could have my own harp rig set up on stage for you if you want.
Thanks for the offer. No need to set up your rig; I'll have my stuff with me, and I'd always rather spend a few moments to use it rather than borrowing somebody else's stuff.
I'll try to stop by. The only reason I can't give you a firm Yes! is that I may just get crazy and play outdoors by myself and 3-5 may be prime time for that......
we've been working up a few new things in preparation for this coming weekend and also for the upcoming blues challenge locally. aside from the open mic friday afternoon we will be doing an opener set firday evening for unseen eye, and also an opener on saturday evening to kick off the show for unseen eye and tas cru.
if you do wander in, please do say hello and let me know you're there- i'll see if i can get you a song or 2 with us or the band!
i expect we'll do the open mic from like 2 to 5 depending on who walks in. pretty informal, we'll have the place to do what we want until showtime at 8 or 9. then we'll do a set and Unseen Eye will do a set or 2 as the main act. these guys are good too. so if you show between say 3 and 8 we should be able to bring you on board!! possibly even if you were to come in later we may could get you up with the band. they are very easy going. we've been doing acts and hitting jams together with them for about a year and never any stress or friction, we just hook up and have a great time on stage.
ok, car will be loaded halfway tonight and we'll be on the road by like 9 a.m. tomorrow. soon as we get settled at the riverside hotel we'll hit Bluesberry Cafe and set up. jam time!!
of course i'll have a report on the other side for any interested to read it!!
I'll hit Clarksdale around 2:30 and will come on down. I plan to set up on the streets afterwards.
I'm driving over on Saturday, too. This weekend is my last chance to polish stuff for the new Satan and Adam show.

well we're going to get a late start- Jo's tmj kept her up most of the night and she's going to sleep til 11 a.m. or so. meanwhile i'll get the car packed the rest of the way and we'll hit it by noon. Cdale by 3 or so, check in at Riverside, and get everything set up for tonight and hang out in town. i hope to still do some music before we do our "official" opener set at 8 or so. maybe like 5 to 7. and tomorrow we're definitely doing an open mic in the afternoon.
we live on delta time when we're there, things develop differently than say around central arkansas. but without a doubt music will be happening and we'll be doing some of it!
hope to see you walk in the door adam- and whoever!
I played in front of Gary Miller's record shop this afternoon (Friday), a block from Ground Zero.
I'll be there tomorrow from 12 to 2, more or less. There's a young local guitar guy, Vince, who showed up today and will be there tomorrow.
It was 95 in the sun this afternoon when I played. I've been drinking beer and Gatorade ever since in an effort to reeeeeeeeehydrate. I think I'm about there.
adam, it was a pleasure having you up! perhaps next time will be a bit smoother. we had a great time with both unseen eye and tas cru, the two other acts who played at bluesberry over the weekend. the crowds were light but we always make the best of it.
i'll be doing a blog when i recuperate sufficiently!
i just listened to the video adam. very impressive! is the reverb an effect on the video or is that actual sound from your amp setup? cool drum and percussion setup too. i have seen that someplace, maybe here on dirty south.
blog about the whole weekend probably tonight when i have time.
The little bit of reverb that you hear on the harp is my Boss DD-3 digital delay. I've been using it for years; I specifically got it because I wanted something to thicken my street-sound. Glad you noticed it!
I love the video , always liked the stripped down version of anything , just a man and his instrument , can you deliver? can you transfer the energy? You sure can deliver Sir well done !! The harpgear amp sounds incredible , what model is , and how did you end up using it, why not your own amps?
You open with "Not a Shuffle Blues" -- a version of it, anyway. Nice, nice...
You're packing a fucking shedload of street-cred in this video, Adam. Aviator sunglasses seal the deal. It doesn't seem to be much of a pedestrian town - at least, there's not a great deal of sidewalk action - which is a bit of bummer.
And to top it off, this afternoon "Journeyman's Road" arrived in the mail.
Incidentally, Adam have you ever heard of a one-man blues band in Australia calling himself Ash Grunwald? He's got quite a complicated foot-percussion set-up. It's a cajone with kickstand plus kickdrum and a weird mic'd-up metal plate. Here's a video that gives you the sound without letting you see how it works:
and a video that lets you see how it works without giving you the sound:
And just because I liked it, a gritty version of Smokestack Lightnin':
i posted a blog on our myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/jawboneandjolene it's actually a comment under the blog titled "sunfloer blues and gospel fest" in case anyone's interested in how it all went.
elwood, to the contrary, this was a weird weekend fest- usually it looks more like cherry street in helena during the abhf every october! lots of folks from all over usually clog the streets and hotels and joints and a good time is had by all. not sure what happened this time out.
