Hey, does anyone know any software for finding the keys of songs in your library? (Free ones would be best.) I do practice keying songs, but sometimes I just want to play along. I've tried to find something online but I haven't had good luck finding anything.

Software? Here at the Elk River Institute of Advanced Harmonica Studies, where computer programs are considered sorcery, we draw on the two draw of a harp during the one and four chords. If it sounds good in both, it's in that key.

Ok, here is my secret shame. I'm a multitasker. I'm usually listen to music and surfing the web at the same time. Operating the mouse takes one hand. The harp takes the second. Every time I reach over for a new harp I lose valuable time I could be reading posts here!
Actually, the real problem is I have about 40 gig of music on my computer. I like to use the key to sort songs so I don't have to switch harps after every song. As I pick off the keys, I do add the metadata to the track, but so far I only have the key for a couple hundred songs, so my single key playlists are all pretty short.

Read the stuff on Joni Mitchell or Chinatown, or listen to some Prokofiev. After that you won't care about keys any more! Or take Elk's advice and just buy stuff that's in E. (currently I'm surfing the web and listening to Nouvelle Vague)
On all my blues CDs I've already worked out all the harps and positions, so if I wanted to, I could rip them all and catalogue them by key or burn compilations by key. I've got at least 150GB of music on my stand-alone hard drives, and I'm sure as hell not cataloguing any of that, apart from what I can do with VB Scripts!

I think that half the fun and half the challenge is identifying the key of the song by ear and matching harmonica. I think it's a great exercise. Once you've done it a few times it isn't too hard. There are also resources like Dave Barrett's website that has a ton of blues standards already listed with their keys. The toughest part is finding the key to a song that does NOT have a harmonica playing.

I found a plug-in for Windows Media Player that seems to do an OK job for finding keys. I know it's cheating, but it gets me to the fun part (playing music) faster.
